where the wild flowers grow

Strange love,
you cover your face in a veil of silence,
and you read long nights away
as your dreams escape you,
for that is all you can do
wrapped in those invisible chains,
too afraid to end the suffering.

In your garden,
your daughter's yearn for a father's gentle touch,
and you contemplate the delicate tears
that are yet to fall from their eyes
still free to the breeze, but
for how long?

So
sing
your ancient lullabies,
comb her hair with your sad hands
scarred with life,
for someday
you must say goodbye and gift them all
to men who hope only
to be given proud sons
and will not love her at all.

And with the creases of your aging face,
will go your memory,
your body in an unmarked grave
blowing your identity away
with the grains.
No,
you never existed
but in her memory.

And as this comes to mind to consider,
it takes only one voice to be heard aloud,
but you would rather die than remove the shroud,
afraid to bring quiet suffering to your
family,
afraid to dirty the name...

It only takes one word
to change the course,
and although you've never
thought to speak it
your silence can be heard
here across the Earth.

A beating heart,
that knows to love and cherish,
that knows to teach and touch softly,
is worth so much more than a name.

Thank you, dear Kaoru, for speaking out so powerfully and poignantly in the same time. Things will change, even if slowly, because one courageous voice calls another and then another ...
it is a slow process, but women will stand up and conquer their dignity and freedom, though many have paid their rebellion with their lives ...

Love,
Margherita

Excellent poem Kaoru~
You sure got to the heart of the matter. Love is truly who and what we are.
That's my take on your poem anyway,  and you really drove the point home.

Thanks to you all for your replies. I know this poem is not as good as it could've been, and I am usually better at expressing emotion than this, but the subject is a hard one to functionally describe for me because I haven't experienced it first hand. I can tell you that it's an important issue to me.

Again, thank you.

A fine piece of empathetic writing. You speak for those women who cannot find their voice ~ or are not allowed to use it.

Yo dear Kaoru,

Having spent a good deal of time working as an Engineer in Saudi Arabia, I must say that I was always well treated there, by everyone.

I never spend much time questioning other cultures.  As Bones would say--there's no money in it.

Love Bobby
