The homecoming

On this bright Sunday morning all is still
The sun burns down upon the old stone quay
Clouds are hardly stirring round the hill
Seagulls bob upon a blue and tranquil sea
Only the ferry boat disturbs the peace
Splashing, ploughing where the breakers cease

I climb the cliffs to watch the little bay
The shimmering waves reflect the morning tide
The gulls have lifted and are crying far away
As sunlight dapples ocean deep and wide
Hillside heather crunches stiff beneath my feet
Brown water stands in pools among the peat

How the islanders loved to see the tall ships pass
When in the long and lingering summer days
They would row out across a sea of glass
Westward to where the sun's last crimson rays
Set all the heavens and sea on fire
Beyond the rocks of Arran and Kintyre

Where yellow gorse and heather open to the light
And creamy shells lie tide-strewn along the shore
Slow surge of waves in the soft summer night
All this they knew, and loved, and know no more
They lived their island lives as best they could
Forgotten now, with regret and gratitude...

Heart2Heart,
You've captured the soul
and beauty of their life
in nature and sea,

~   hiya H2H, I'm new here, and new to your poetry

but wow, this reminds me of gorgeous wee movie called The Secret of Roan Inish [I adore that movie]
and the mood you have captured here took me straight back to that place..

you paint with words such a breathtaking scene, soul soothing...with wonderful rhyme and rhythm this is a joy to read out loud...excellent!

*hugs*
