Now please, just sound it out:

"P says peh"

and "ass" says ass--

this is the last one that you get

and I suggest you make it last.

The next time that you take my young

as unto prey, with wiles and ways

Think again, before you bray

I'll unravel you till hanged

by the looseness of your tongue

(I see you have a little neck.)

Perhaps that is your fortune, blest.

Don't mess with me and mine --desist.

I will snap your little wrists

and use your bones as a toothpick,

as if you had some meat to stick

in between my teeth

the witch

has no lessons but forgive

but hurt me once I pray for you--

hurt me twice I pray for me

for I now know the sweet revenge--

do not attack my young again.

I wear metal belts

and grin

feeling horns grow on my head.

You talk too much, you do,

my friend

so do not pass this way again.

I'll have to step up and defend

this onslaught of stupidity.

And I would much rather wait

until the karma rolls around to sate

your incessant drooling tongue.

I warn you--don't you ever touch my young.

I'll slap the dead and living hell

performing exorcism's might

with a backhand of your slight:

Take this pass and let it end

before your nose will spite your face

by the power of my grace

of my forty and plus eight

years of rage insatiate,

waiting for the day.

Heavens above, I do like a bit of have-a- go poetry, but this is the daddy(or should I say mummy) of them all.
I certainly would not want to cross you. Skillfully executed; the threat almost leaps off the page.

Okay.

I confess.

Someone said something I found irritating last night.

?

MOMS RULE

and sheesh, I nearly forgot my manners! (I see how that can be contagious now)

Thank you all for reading, and just line up, and you'll all be deputized. *laughing*

Yo Serenity blaze,

You have the right idea Hon.  It's good to keep the young from harm.

You might remember "Paregoric" from my Autobiography "City Boy Stays Alive"

"Paragoric"

I’m five,
my mama works all the time,
so grandma keeps me.

Last night was bad,
my teeth hurt again,
because they’re rotten.

Grandma’s nice,
she tries to make me sleep,
gives me Paregoric.

She holds me in the rocking chair,
and sings—
“Sweetest little fellow,
anybody knows,
don’t know what to call him
but he’s mighty like a rose.”

It’s one of my favorite songs
because it’s about me.

This morning grandma’s says she’s tired of me,
says she can’t stand it anymore.

Grandma gives me more Paregoric,
tells me “Go away,
ride your scooter around the block”.

I like the Paregoric,
it tastes sweet,
makes my tongue feel funny.

I get my scooter,
this is the first time
I’m allowed to go around the block
by myself.

I’m a big boy now,
I can do those things,
the scooter is lots of fun,
and I like to ride it.

I go around the block a couple of times.
There are rich people living on the corner,
they have a new garage
next to their house,
it smells good in there,
so I go in.

Then I hear a noise,
and look around.

A big man is back there,
pulling down the garage doors,
he’s staring at me kind of funny.
I don’t like him.

He’s big and wide,
like some kind of giant.

He locks the doors shut,
I don’t like that at all.

He walks over to me.
I never saw anyone look at me that way.
I think he wants to hurt me.

There is an open window right beside me.
I jump up, and try to crawl out the window.
But the man grabs me,
pulls me off the window,
starts taking my pants down.

I feel his hands shaking,
they’re hot,
and I don’t like that at all.

I don’t know why he’s doing that,
he’s hurting me real bad.

I scream and scream,
tell him to stop,
but he doesn’t.

He’s too strong,
there’s nothing I can do.
When I wake up the man is gone.
The garage door is open.

I leave my scooter there in the garage,
run home to tell grandma.

She leaves me in the house,
goes down to see the rich people
on the corner.

When she comes back,
she has my scooter,
she gives me more Paregoric,
tells me to stop crying,
everything is Ok.

I think the rich people
gave her some money,
because she puts something
in her dresser drawer,
where she keeps her money.

I don't think it could be from the rich man.
I don't think he’d do anything nice
like give grandma money
or anything like that.

amazing

Elvis Costells's collection, Mighty Like A Rose, is one of my favorites, and the phrase itself is, well, mighty like a rose.

Love the poem, Bobby, and I'm smiling. I don't recall reading it before, so I very much appreciate you posting here for me.

Thanks, lovie, for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful reply.

I've been thinking about this poem and its inspiration all afternoon, and after much consideration, I've decided that I need to thank the person who made a snarkily snide cheap shot comment about one of my children. Because the fact that it bothered me so much made me realize that I, also, too often, go for the cheap shot, and lazily allow clever to substitute for true intelligence and wit.

It's a bad habit of mine. Mea Culpa, and I do try to learn as I muddle my way through this life thing.

Thanks again, hon.

Yo Senenity blaze,

Who's your kid posting here?  So many people seem to be related here.

At least now you know who the rose is.

It's still one of my favorite, very ancient, songs.

Dear Serenity Blaze,

This is the old "Might Like a Rose", as made famous by Paul Robeson.  That's a little before your time, but not mine.

Dear Serenity blaze,

Here's the "Mighty Like A Rose" that I know, and that grandma sang to me.  It was made famous by Paul Robeson.  It's based on an old African American song.

"Sweetest little fellow
Everybody knows
Don't know what to call him
But he's mighty like a rose

Looking for his Mommy
With eyes so shiney blue
Making you think that heaven
Is coming close to you

When he's there a-sleeping
In his little place
Think I see the angels
Looking through the lace

When the dark is falling
When the shadows creep
Then they come on tiptoe
To kiss him in his sleep

Sweetest little fellow
Everybody knows
Don't know what to call him
But he's mighty like a rose

Looking for his Mommy
With eyes so shiney blue
Making you think that heaven
Is coming close to you"

Love Bobby

Yanno? tsk to me, because I have yet to hear the original, and that is indeed a shame, since a hobby of mine is to collect the "covers" by various artists along with the original. I first heard the song sans lyrics, and I think it was a rare recording by Charlie Bird Parker. *smile* It was a long time ago and I was touching somebody's beloved blues and jazz collection without permission.

And I could talk about this stuff all day!

I'm fortunate to live in a city that indulges me so, but I know NY has much jazz and blues history as well, and I am totally aching to attend the Chicago Blues Fest too.

Thanks for the info and chatting with me about it. If you happen to run across that Parker version, be sure to let me know, k?

I've been looking for a long time to find that again, and my memory might not even be serving me well, as google seems to not be much help. Maybe it was Miles Davis?

sigh

This is gonna bug me all night now.

Nodding.

There is a long list of that sorta thing, and the most well known example would be Big Mama Thornton's "Houndog" covered by Elvis.

Have you ever listened to this radio station?
http://www.wwoz.org/

Check it out. I've been a devoted fan since they did three nights of total education of just that sort. And if I can find that site, it listed well over 100 famous songs, and the original artists were denied recognition for a very long time--not to mention um, their royalties.

I'm not against cover songs, for example I totally adore Annie Lennox's version of Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down". It's a great song as Neil does it, but her version has a very haunting resonance with her beautiful pipes interpretating that one.

But...do check out that radio station. You'll hear everything from Doctor Demento to Keb Mo to The Subdudes to...ohhhhhhhh.

And yep, I've been pushing that one Pip for years, now.

(I really could talk about this all night.)

In fact, I have! *laughing* Enjoy, sweetie!

Thanks dear Serenity blaze,

I've added that radio station to my favorites list.

My youngest son taught math at Loyola U for a few years.  He loved it there.  My Mom used to take me there when I was a child.  We rode free on the railroad.  She was a nurse for the railroad.  It was great; I got around the U. S. like you wouldn't believe, all free.  They called us “dead heads”, because the railroad didn’t get any money from us.

Love Bobby
