Growing Up

Bear cub scampers on the ice;
mother brings back her kill.
In her teeth a caribou;
for the den it will suffice.
Cub reaches for a bloody bit,
a rough paw shoves him away.
As oft he tries he is rebuffed;
he’s left with nary a whit.
When the cubs are done
they repose and play;
save for one hungry cub.
He mopes about feeling sad;
ravenous and woebegone.
A lemming chances to emerge
from his burrow in the snow.
The hungry cub tries to pounce;
Alas!
He is too slow.
Angry now he stalks a fox;
a fine meal that will make!
The fox bites hard on cub’s nose.
A painful lesson is learned by cub
in the wild school of hard knocks.
A tundra wolf with catch in tow
appears out of the fog.
The desperate cub, so resolute,
attacks the wolf with mighty roar.
Rightly so, the wolf could claim
he’d beat up on the bear.
The cub succeeded, nonetheless;
of the catch he’d grabbed his share.
As he greedily ate his meal
and began to lick his wounds,
a mother bear watches.
Satisfied.
Yes.
This one will survive.

Tough lessons indeed, but that's the way Nature works.

Just saw the movie "Earth" and could picture your wonderful poem very well!

Welcome to Pip!

I greatly enjoyed your first entry!

Love,
Margherita

Survival of the fittest! You painted a vivid picture of animal life in the wilds of the tundra. Excellent work!

Hello, Collins! Welcome to our "Family of Friends". I was captivated by your debuting poem! I must admit, however, I am glad that I was a human baby!

Giving you a warm, welcoming pip hug,

Earth Angel

Yo Collins613,

I like your poem very much.  It's good to see something from New York City.
