Visibly (un)Forgotten Teachers

The earliest visible memory seems to be
the day my brother was born, late
1953; Ike was a name I heard even earlier on;
and the house always seemed rich
with smells and flavors

and then the 60’s rushed in: we had
transgressed from TV to record player
back to TV  because money wasn’t
always there, and then back again;
we seemed to quietly deal with
hard times; didn’t discuss economics
at table; just ate beans and rice,
mixed sometimes with hamburger or
spaghetti that stretched three ways to Sunday,

but Sundays were special because that’s when
we plucked our own un-named
chickens clean of his or her feathers.

It seemed to be a good time, except for those days
of going to church; if you wore the same dress
twice in two Sundays, you weren’t wanted back,
back then; otherwise no one appeared to be
missing much of anything; we were hard
put to even try to catch up back then
with the Smiths or the Joneses…we all seemed
similar – kindly – neighborly – together.

We were more concerned about windows
disappearing from our new neighbors’ home
just because they weren’t as
untanned as we were…

we were all just simple people leading
what seemed to be a good life.
That’s what some remember.

Media stretched its fingers, computers were coming
of age, technology was the newest key word that
Merriam needed to define
while the record player played Allegheny Moon.

We only thought we knew the multiplication table;
we were nonplussed at the black hole’s expediency
– seemingly faster than a red ant’s hole taking over
of a small mound that eventually found my toes when a
two wheeled bike overturned.

Then a teacher asked, where will you be
In the year 2000?

God Bless Teachers. Even she didn’t know where she
might be; and she never expected her oncoming
experiences even back then.

What have you seen since the day you were born?

Then, it seemed, teachers seemed to be everywhere –
within the heart of next door neighbors; in store clerks,
where the rabbi or the cleric might walk;

in a stranger with no ill in his or her heart; no one
was exempt from teaching good examples
that seemed to stretch around every corner
even when one might see a dark stranger…

even he would smile at the uninitiated; and
then smiling, turn them back onto the road
they were meant to follow.

~*~

And yes, I know this was but a dream scape to
grow through, but it was there; it was real,
it was exceptionally good except for the bad
that was hardly ever reported.

We all wanted a Disney World
that only Walt could provide – until late 1963.

But I will always be exceptionally grateful
for fireworks that later occurred in my life.

Nice to read your heart words again Karilea.
A pleasant summer afternoon flowed through this verse...complete with barefeet, and penny candy.  I enjoyed this sweet feast very much.

Yo Sunshine,

I remember those days.  I would never want to go back.

Those days were horrible.

I like the world we live in now.  It's not perfect, but it's much kinder, and more open to all.

Oh Karilea, I really enjoyed reading this wonderful poem that brought back so many

memories to me. It was a much simpler way of life back then and although times were

tough, I really think people in general were much happier in those days. Life now

seems such a daily rush. Great write dear lady. thanks for sharing. Love to you my friend.

Karilea, this was such a warm, folksy, smiley-kinda read. Sort of a "Little House on the Prairie" scenario in your early years.

Yeppers! Times have changed! Now we're plugged into everything!

I felt like I really learned something about life in this poem. The simplicity of it all.

Then again, I've always really loved your poetry and I missed reading you.

Karilea ... like a trip down memory lane ... I was born in 53 and the only thing you seem to have neglected here was my dislike for parsnips and asparagus

So much of this was part of my past...you've brought forth so many memories, snapshots of growing up in southern California under Disney skies and fantasies.
thanks for the time-trip, Karilea!

Ladies & Gentlemen;

My computer time [and computer folderols] just now let me catch up with all of your comments.

Thank you.

I thought I might have attended our own series of Open Mic this last week, but I was unable to show, although I had this very poem ready to read to them.

However, your own responses have added greatly to this rambling of mine, and I thank you deeply, quietly, perhaps even spiritually; and yes Rex, someday I may get you to own up to even trying asparagus...

and Bobby? I'm sorry you saw those times as hard times, but I do understand...

to all of you, thank you for reading my writes. I always want to try to entertain, to allow you to grow; and mostly, to say what I feel, even though most times I hide the hard stuff.

But I'm growing, too. And the hard stuff is struggling to find its own voice.

Ok, I'm rambling again; but any poet who is a poet, knows.

Thank you, my dear friend, for just reading.

Stevenr...

If we can't refind our footholds of where we were, how could we ever find a saving grace of where we are now?

Thanks for your eyes...

Do we have something in common...nothing like nostalgia to keep you going through today's mess. Well done.
