She had a cotton candy smile
and looked at him with gumdrop eyes
barefoot along a gravel road
she held his hand like they were kids

Their fingers interlaced like swans
slow motion in a midday hug
they floated down a Midwest road
he'll never wash that dust away

She left him on a sunny day
with rain clouds wrapped around his head
he watched her wave a last goodbye
and left him barefoot in the fog

He stood there in their memories
all day hoping that she'd return
he took the shortcut home that night
The road was just to long alone

He mailed her letters everyday
the way that they had promised to
until one day a lady said
"I think that these belong to you"

And there inside a shoe box
were the words that he had sent
with purple wildflowers taped
across each one next to her name

That shoe box looked so helpless
as he wrapped it in a plastic bag
then sent it down the river
and he watched her float away

He thought they were a perfect pair
two swans upon a gravel road
He thought she'd last forever
that's exactly what she did

Sometimes he sees her gumdrop eyes
and cotton candy smile
and smells the honeysuckle
blow across an old dirt road

He wonders if she thinks of him
the way he often thinks of her
his first love from his grade school days
Nila... Do you remember him...

First love letters are hard to forget. So much emotion. You wrote a beautiful piece here, really.

This is beautiful and tragic all at once.  I hope she remembers.

critical mass - brings back many memories of someone left behind. Perhaps being too young, or something, but....
