One wonders what
The fascination was

A soldier
Just like them
Though in
Another uniform
Lying on
His stomach
With half his face
Blown off

Was there
Any sense
Of future tense

When each
Of them
Might be
On another beach
Equally no more
Than a curiosity
For the boring hour

And who is that
Taking pictures
So prim and nonchalant
As if he were luckier
Than us all

Certain
That in another
Month or two
Despite this horror
Summarized as war

He wouldn’t be
In his nothing more
The focus
Of a callous eye

Yes, a fine piece of writing, this certainly is.
War must be dehumanising, especially when you are conditioned to believe that your enemy is sub-human.
Drew me to re-read Keith Douglas's: 'Vergissmeinnicht'. It brilliantly delivers humanity to the slaughter.
