               My Old Mate Jack

I met an old mate the other day, whom I hadn’t seen for years,
I’d always liked to keep in touch but my effort was in arrears,
I took a stroll around the public park and sat down upon a seat,
Little did I realize then that an old mate I’d chance to meet.

I didn’t take much notice as he came walking down the track
But as he drew a little closer I could see my old mate Jack,
We had gone to school together, we were mates from long ago
But we had different interests and apart we seemed to grow.

Jack was always keen on racing and liked to have a bet,
The last tip that he gave to me, I think it’s racing yet,
I was far more keen on footy, it is my favourite sport,
You seldom win when betting for with danger it is fraught.

Good day Bill, he said to me and shook me by the hand,
Fancy seeing you down here and it wasn’t even planned,
Let’s go down to the pub and we’ll sink a couple of beers,
It’ll be like old times again when we started our careers.

It’s good to see you Jack I said, I often wondered how you are,
I often meant to give a ring or take a run down in the car,
Yes, it’s been a while since we had a beer, let’s go old mate,
We’ll reminisce about the good old times and later news relate.

We fronted up to the bar and ordered a couple of pots,
I suppose you still have a bet and do you follow still the trots,
He looked at me concernedly, saying at last I’ve seen the light,
Those blimey horses bled me dry and added to my plight.

Gambling really brought me down, my wife has left you see,
She said if I didn’t give it up that she would clear out on me,
She often warned me in the past about giving up the nags,
She said she was always short & that I smoked too many fags.

I thought she was only bluffing and no notice did I take,
She said that if I didn’t stop no longer would she bake,
Or clean the house or make a bed or a hundred other chores,
Her tether’s end she’d finally reached, she really bared her claws.

And now although I’ve seen the light, I’ve left my run too late,
She took the car and all her clothes and vanished out the gate,
Things are quite different now to when both of us were young
And now I’m on my Pat Malone and the truth at last is sprung.

It would be great to turn back the clock and not be so unkind,
We often choose a risky path, for too many things we’re blind,
There was writing on the wall that at the time seemed strange
But could I live my life again there’d be many things I’d change.

I felt quite sorry for my old mate as he hung his head in shame,
It’s so easy to pass the buck but it takes a man to cop the blame,
We know what we should’ve done & in hindsight can all be wise,
So let us learn from our mistakes and not the future jeopardize.

LindsayP - my friend, you write true words in this writing. If only one could go back and change just one thing, but alas it's not to be...

OK, Lindsay,  that one surprized me.
I thought you were going to be stuck with the tab.  Nice to see people can change.
A little prophetic wisdom from the Poet down under.
Nice write, my friend.

Advice well taken Lindsay!. No more gambling and bad ways. Few changes are for good. Did you help your mate out this situation?
