The Leprechaun and the Raven
by Linda L. Dowd

Through the open window,
I spied a leprechaun.
~ Dancing in my garden,
in the early rays of dawn.

I stood quite still and listened,
to his singsong incantations.
He sang from deep within his soul,
of his joys and lamentations.

He’d spin and twirl ~ leap and prance,
and kick his heels up high.
With flap of arms ~ he tried to rise,
in to the rainbow sky.

He landed on his bottom,
but his smile belied his pain.
He then popped up with alacrity,
and then he tried again.

The flapping and the waving,
soon tired his tiny arms.
~ “It seems that I'm a leprechaun
who has lost his lucky charms!”

Lines of sheer frustration,
soon etched his elfin face.
He raised a tiny fist up high,
~ trilling, “This is a disgrace!”

“My fairy friends have gossamer wings
and go flitting about the sky.
But here I sit ~ stuck on the ground.
“Oh me!  Oh me!  Oh my!”

He sauntered thru’ the garden paths,
alone and feeling blue.
~ Knowing what he wanted,
but not knowing what to do.

The elf then heard a raven,
~ cawing out his name.
He couldn't bear to meet its eyes,
as he hung his head in shame.

“What seems to be the problem?”,
~ the raven asked, quizzically.
“Might I lend a helping wing,
~ to end your misery?”

“Thank you for your kindness,
but there’s nothing you can do.
I’m just a hapless, wingless elf,
who can't fly up in yonder blue.”

“I long for a pair of gossamer wings
that could lift me high in the air.
But all I have are two tiny arms,
that are unable to fly me there.”

“Rejoice, my friend ~ the time has come,
for the bell of joy to ring.
Hop aboard the Raven Express,
flown by feathered wing.

He climbed upon the raven’s back,
and held on very tight.
And soon the two were swooping,
through skies so blue and bright.

The leprechaun delighted,
in all that he could see.
~ He was even happier,
than he hoped he'd ever be.

A vista lay before him.
~ Lakes, rivers, hills and streams.
Everything was lovelier,
than the visions in his dreams.

The world was much bigger,
than he ever thought it’d be.
It stretched for miles and miles,
~ from sea to shimmering sea.

When the flight was over,
the crow cawed, “Don’t be blue”.
If ever you'd like to fly again,
~ I’ll come around for you.”

Feeling a sense of freedom,
and a peace within himself.
~ He no longer envied others,
for he was glad to be an elf.

.

I love this poem, its such a great story, and you can almost see the real thing unfolding in your head.....frame by frame it's so clear...very nice and a good moral. To help fulfill a need for someone might just be the biggest gift of all.

I love the elf and imp in you, Linda. She certainly has wings, and I see them everytime I'm on your page.  She's never earthbound but for pitstops to check her treasures here, and leaves gift of levity and warmth from a sparkling heart.

The body of this and the tightness of the rhyme and flow is amazing.
The story is just too cute too!
The elf needed that and so do we all.

Loved it.

Earth Angel - Here I was thinking that sadness, frustration and the lack of friendship were afflictions of the real world only to find out that they get resolved in the world of fantasy. May we all take a lesson from that. Thanks EA for an inventive and creative story that puts a smile on anyone reading it, like me. Namyh

Chalmette Guy ~

Hi, CG! Most people think that leprechauns have all the good luck of the Irish ~ shamrocks, lucky charms, Keebler Cookies, pots of gold at the end of rainbows etc., etc. However, some leps are less fortunate and need a friend to "lift" them up ~ and in this case, literally!

Hi, LP! I must admit that I do have a rather fertile imagination. It comes in handy if ever I become a tad bit bored. Which truly is not that often.

As always, it was a pleasure to read your reply!

Love you too, my dear Aussie friend!

A case of treading, or should I say flying over, the other man's grass, and realising that it is no greener than home.
An enchanting tale, and I know just the person to read this to. Thank you.

I used to live in a neighbourhood where all the streets were named after birds. Our street ran off of Osprey!

I believe it is in the hawk family.

I was touched when I read that you plan on reading my poem for someone! Please give them a warm hug from me ~ and keep one for yourself!

Thank you for your thought-filled response!

Belle, you can hop aboard this Angel Air Express anytime you need a lift! ~ Spiritual or otherwise!

Please note that leprechauns have been known to be very generous to those who are kind to them. ~ and I'm sure that would give you lift or a different nature!
