               An Unlikely Tale

The topic suggested  for our next poetry meet is  about some unlikely tale,
There are so many that I could display but here is one story in extra detail,
It certainly does sound unlikely for great pain would be caused by the friction
But like that statement I’ve often been told, truth is often stranger than fiction.

This happened so many years ago now when our men went off to war,
When the battle raged both to and fro, we didn’t know what was in store.
The battle was fort on the dry desert sands, causalities great on both sides,
Our wounded were taken by willing hands to the field hospital they provide.

The wounded soldiers were laid out in rows with many different complaints,
Why some were there, God only knows, while others a sad picture they paint.
On this weary day the major dropped in to try and bolster the spirits of the men,
A word of compassion to the soldiers there in, helped to allay their fears once again.

He asked the first soldier just how he felt and why was he laid up in bed,
‘Major, I have a very bad case of syphilis,’ was the sad answer the soldier said.
‘I’m sorry to hear that,’said the Major, what are you doing for it, he said with distaste,
‘Each morn with a wire brush I give it a scrape,’ said Bill with a sad look on his face.

‘That certainly sounds painful, but when it is cured what is your immediate ambition,’
‘To return to the front line as soon as I can, when my cure comes to fruition.’
Approaching the next soldier he asked him ‘what are you in here for Giles’
The soldier replied that he’d been in great pain with a bad attack of the piles.

‘And what are you doing to ease up the pain,’ the Major then wanted to know,
‘Each morning with the wire brush on them, a good five minute scratch I bestow’
‘Good for you soldier, now tell me what is your immediate intension,’
‘To get back to the front line as soon as I can,’but said it with some apprehension.

To the third soldier he smiled and said, ‘and what problem have you sustained,’
‘I have a very bad infection in my gums Sir that gives me so very much pain.’
‘What are you doing to help with their cure,’ asked the Major now looking forlorn,
‘With a wire brush, I give them a good five minute scratch quite early every morn,’

‘Well that sounds a bit harsh, but so long as it helps and eases up with the pain,
Not being a medical man, from giving advice, I must certainly now refrain.
And what is your immediate intention’ the Major was quite quick to inquire,
‘To get the wire brush before the other blokes do is certainly my greatest desire’

Ha ha! LOL!
Leave to you Lindsay to come up with a punch line like that.

I loved it and laughed heartily.

I decided to NOT visualize that brush.
You find humor everywhere, don't you?
It will no doubt help you live a long and happy life.
