A web of highways
crisscrossing
the western United States,
passing cheap motels,
on the way to
towns full of strangers.
A rented home in a new neighborhood.
A different school,
where all the other children
know each other
and view the new student
with suspicion.
A need to travel light
and not become too attached.

It's a sad truth you write of, Ida. The new kid is often looked at sideways.
Buddhist tradition encourages one to not become overly attached to people or objects, as everything is impermanent. But that doesn't make it any easier to deal with even a temporary rejection, especially for children.

Yo dear Ida,

There is no such thing as a happy childhood.  That's not the way the world's set up.

Thank you, Kacy and Bobby. Actually, I think I was a fairly happy child, in spite of everything. I was always able to create my own space and use the sence of humor to get by,

I grew up close to a military town... where classmates came and went... and opened my eyes to worlds beyond my small community... so I've always been grateful for "new kid"s. *S*

You've written their pain of upheaval so very well!

I grew up in the military and was always moving and changing schools, so this is one I can really relate to.  Enjoyed much.

When I was seven, my family went on a year and a half camping trip. We were gypsies.  Sometimes we would stop and go to school.  Some were nice - some were awful.  But, I had my sisters and brother and my Raggedy Anne and Andy.  What more did I need?

Okay, I needed my cat too.

Been there too, Ida.  I love how you brought so much back to me.  I believe that is the beauty of poetry.

Love,
A

Dear Ida, you have told a great school time
story that has happened to so many kids over the years. You wrote it well, but I

can't agree with Bobby that there are no such thing as a happy childhood. I know

lots of people who have had a wonderful childhood including myself. Love to you dear friend.

Thank you all for your comments on my vagabond childhood poem. Hi Alison, Yes, I have a feeling we have a few things in common.

Now that I am older and have a young child, I get to see his life and how he reacts to people in a different light.
He is a very happy boy and is very outgoing, has no trouble talking to people and making friends.
I wonder and worry about when that will change.  I hope he continues to be that happy boy I know now.

Tracey.

Reminds me of my childhood, as far as about every three years we would move due to my father being in the Air Force, and it affected me...James
