Since my early days when the die was cast,
I’ve travelled wide o’er this planet vast,
And so many times have I been asked,
Is there a better land than Australia.
A biased opinion I must not give,
For places many I’ve worked and lived,
But when through them all I’ve sieved,
To name a better place has always been a failure.

To hear the vibrant yell of an excited crowd
At a football match when they roar aloud,
It’s one of the things that make me proud
Of this great land of Australia.
To stand in the bar with a glass of beer
And share a yarn with mates held dear,
There’s no place on earth where you can live freer
Than in this great land of Australia.

To gaze at those great Kosciusko peaks,
For of magic beauty it always speaks,
Where bellbirds ring by cascading creeks
Along with lyre-birds in their resplendent regalia.
To gaze on that great Riverina plain
Where wildfowl abound in a vast domain,
To see wildflowers bloom after soaking rain,
It’s just another wonder of Australia.

To see a bounding mob of kangaroos
Or a swirling cloud of cockatoos,
Gaudy coloured parrots in reds and blues,
In fact, in every colour of a dahlia.
To hear a dingo’s howl from a camp-fire bright,
A flight of swans on a moonlit night,
The swish of wings as they pass from sight,
        That’s why I love Australia.

Yo Lindsay,

I like Australia too.  I remember gleefully the Cricket Match between Australia and New Zealand that I attended in Melbourne.  The riot was loads of fun.  But then I'm into that.

Next to perhaps Mexico, and England, Australia is my favorite place outside of Philadelphia, PA, USA.

love your poem and it is all true
but
the reason I love australia is that  when I walk  down the main streets of Melbourne playing "spot the Aussie "  with my friends you cannot find one.... you can find humans of every kind and national costumes of every hue and words of every tongue... we are truly multi cultural
and I love that.

Home is where the heart is and I think that cliche is so true when it comes to all of us.
I love Canada the same way for different reasons.
Wonderful respectful images Lindsay and a fine fine poem. I have always wanted to visit your country. I've been to quite a few but your country intrigues me quite a bit. There is such a vast array of different climate and geological changes within your continent.

Take care.

Lindsay, My friend,  I have always wanted to see Australia, and hope to before I am through with my Earthly travels.
This poem is such a tribute to your country, If you don't send it to your local paper or have it published, it would be a shame.
This should be a gift to the people of your country.

Wonderful poem.

Love, Tracey.

Makes me want to see your beautiful Australia. That is one place I have always wanted to travel. My Grandpa wanted to move there YEARS ago, but I think he decided against it because my Grandmother became pregnant with my Mother. I had a pen pal from Australia when I was in high school. We spoke on the phone once. I LOVED her accent. Lovely poem.

I almost made it there. Back in 1968, the Australian government was offering to pay for plane fare, housing and a decent salary for anyone qualified in certain industries who would come and work for at least two years. I gave it a lot of thought but didn't go. When I meet people from there, read of Austrailia through Banjo's eyes, I wish I had gone.

I've been trying to woo Roniece enough to get an invite but she's a tough cookie!

The poem is excellent. I appreciate your skill of the craft, sir.

Thank you Wind Walker for your kind comments, They are always appreciated.

Thanks Maranda I'm sure you would enjoy a trip to Aussie, there is a lot to see.

Balladeer thank you too. What a shame you didn''t take the chance when you had it to pay us a visit. I am in a wheel chair and my wife, who is in poor health, has her hands full with looking after me, otherwise I would be more than happy to invite you over to see our great country. I am quite sincere about that, it's not just an excuse.
Thanks again and you take care.
A great Easter to you all.

it is writing as vibrant as this that captures the mystical, magical quality that many of us have conjured for that land down under...you've represented her well

Aussie Man ~

I'm priming my wings for the flight! ~ It's going to be a mighty long one ~ but a mighty worthwile one, I'd wager! ~ and besides, I could also be afforded the opportunity of meeting you and Norma in person!

Yeppers, my wings are at the ready! Up, up and away to Aussieland!

Enjoyed your vividly descriptive poem about your homeland!

Love & a hug,

A tremendous tribute to a fine land. The only truly classless nation on earth, and you have every reason to be proud.
Never yet had the privledge of a visit, but I've met many Aussies and the conversation was always the best.
I'm off to find my Eric Bogle cd, and play, 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'
I know he's a Scotsman, but so am I.

My dear Alison, love recipricated
and thanks for the comment.

Boshii, you sound like Mother Teresa and
Florence Nightingale rolled into one very kind and generous lady. It makes me feel so humble to be offered so much out of the goodness of your heart. I am a paraplegic
confined to a wheel chair and that puts quite a break on my life, so I am unable to accept your very kind offer but I do thank you sincerely for it. I am very fortunate
in haveing a loving and very efficient wife
who looks after me well. Thanks again and love to you and your family.

Thanks Bill, I'm sure you would enjoy a holiday out here so you had better do some hard thinking and see what you can do.
I would love to meet you.

Steave thanks so much my friend for your always kind comments. It would be great to meet you as well.

My dear Linda, what a lovely surprise it would be to meet you in person, so don't waste the time of having the wind under your wings, get those airflight tickets and put your plan in action. Thanks for your kind omment.

Osprey, thank you very much my friend for taking the time to comment. It sounds like you might come from Scotland as well. If I recall properly, they have bred Osprey up in the North of Scotland these last few years. I hope that is right.
Love and best wishes to you all.

I am going there one day, my fine friend.

(Seriously, I have a hot pink pushpin on the map!)

I have a date with a lovely lady to attend an opera, at the most awesome Sydney Opera House, and I vow to bear witness to the gruesome sun to watch this lovely dame body surf--just because she's hot.

And btw? I've been trying to find THE TUB of vegemite--and everyone is "sold out", so if you know of anyone, leave me a link, k? I really need to order fast--I gave up my privvies on a jazz fest ticket for the privelage of a tub of vegemite!

(I could get marmalite, but naw...)

IT MUST BE VEGEMITE.

LERVE THE STUFF!!!

yummers you, and yer poetry

(great hat, too, btw)

You delight me.
