Half a lifetime from the golden years
and the tides keep rolling in
and in the mighty waves I hear
their spirit calling me again.
Shaking sails and cetecean
and tales of yore unfold.
In the weeping wind my ancient friends
keep calling out to my soul.

My brothers deep keep calling my soul.
I hear them call when the sloop keel rolls.
Over the top I watch them blow
my brothers deep are calling my soul.
The big wheel kicks and the main sails grow
and my brothers deep keep calling my soul.

The windsongs play and the sheets fill up
and the brine is in my eyes.
I'm coming up with a roaring rush
the waves fall into the sky.
Cross the watery dawn the sun smiles in
and the blue-gray turns to gold
and my brothers deep and the restless wind
keep calling out to my soul.

Well I knew all along that we were one
where the sea always meets the sky.
The wheelhouse rocks on the morning run
now we're rolling side by side.
Over the top there's an old wild song
sacred love songs of old.
When the trick is done and the run moves on
they keep singing on in my soul.

My brothers deep keep calling my soul.
I hear them call when the sloop keel rolls.
Over the top I watch them blow
my brothers deep are calling my soul.
The big wheel kick and the main sails grow
and my brothers deep keep calling my soul.

I always click on your threads with anticipation, knowing I'll be hearing music in my mind as I read your words.

"My brothers deep keep calling my soul.
I hear them call when the sloop keel rolls.
Over the top I watch them blow
my brothers deep are calling my soul.
The big wheel kick and the main sails grow
and my brothers deep keep calling my soul."

This is soooooo very Gordon Lightfoot, lovie. I'm not saying it's not distinctive either, I can just hear that guitar played like a sideway cello...

And speaking of brothers? This one made me miss mine very much. He's the only guy who could make me sing when I really didn't wanna.

But then? I have yet to meet you.

All we need is time, time, time...

*hugs, smiles and smoochies*

Even before I read serenity's comment, I was thinking of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald... which never fails to move me. *S*

In the weeping wind my ancient friends
keep calling out to my soul.

Mr brothers deep keep calling my soul.

Beautiful, haunting words... you make us stop and ponder and FEEL what it's like to work with danger as constant companion. This is fantastic!

Oh, Eric, I was so moved by this. You have  heart and soul ~ and a whole lotta talent.

I'm still reeling from the feelings that this erupted in me.

(When I was a girl, I lived right on the shore on Shediac Bay in New Brunswick. I am still fascinated by sea shanties ~ and sailors!)

"Heave ho, out they go, with the morning tide" ~ lyrics from one of my songs.

Warm hug,
Linda

Yo Bill,

This is good, and fairly well written.  One little error:

"Mr (did you mean “My” here?) brothers deep keep calling my soul.
I hear them call when the sloop keel rolls.
Over the top I watch them blow
my brothers deep are calling my soul.
The big wheel kicks and the main sails grow
and my brothers deep keep calling my soul."

Hey Celeste.

Thanks for the Lightfoot reference. Also for the anticipation.
I'm glad it sang for you because that's a big part of the point of this piece.

It's really designed for a type of group like 'The Great Big Sea' a group very popular all over Canada but especially so on the east coast of Canada.

Type their name into your favorite search engine and you'll see (Sea) what I mean.

Thanks love for the visit and the comments. It's always so good to read your words here. Sorry to read you're missing your brother so much. Hang in there and sing your soul out.

Ruth

I love that tune too. It's a classic. There's documentary 1/2 hour TV program on the wreck and it's very well done.
The whole thing is tragic!

Thanks for the fantastic word that's much appreciated. You are as sweet as your fine poetic expressions.

Take care

Linda

Thanks for those loving kind words I appreciate them more than you can imagine.

I didn't know you lived in Shediac. I just love Parlee beach.
I'm in little peaceful Fredericton the capital. Pretty little city with the St John River flowing through the middle of it.

Once again thanks so much for all the kind words.

I love great rhyme and this holds the call of the sea as well! I've never been sailing, but I got to watch the white sailing sloops and regattas one summer with their magic glide over a blue bay.  So the waves falling into the sky really tugged at my mind.  Such beautiful imagery.

Eric,

We are lucky that you shared their call with us.  I like this a lot - I am not a sailor at all, but I felt the waves and the sloop roll (and I knew why I am not a sailor).

I love tasting the salt on my lips though.

Thank you, Eric.

Thank you Alison for those nice comments.
If you tried being a sailor it would get into your blood and you'd be hooked for life.
