.

The dawn sun
Casts a blue glow
On green lawns

Dew glistens
On summer grasses—
Small squirrels are silently
Leaping from tree to tree
And birds are beginning
To sing

There is this
Curious indifference
In the animal world
As it goes about
Treating as no more
Than impediments
Walls and fences
Those white sided houses
With their wooden eaves

Shadows
Shimmer and fade
To the sound
Of the town hall bell

As if it had anything
To do with me

as usual ... fine impressionistic imagery ...

I am particularly fond of the beginning:

"The dawn sun
Casts a blue glow
On green lawns

Dew glistens
On summer grasses—
Small squirrels are silently
Leaping from tree to tree
And birds are beginning
To sing"

AND:

"Shadows
Shimmer and fade
To the sound
Of the town hall bell..."

sustained applause for this 'penning' !!

I spent much time as a child camping or on a canal boat and always marvelled over the simplicity of the countryside.  You summed up many of my thoughts beautifully here.  A great read.

In such an ugly time, beauty is the real protest

Yo John,

I love this, in particular the last line.  You sound like another city boy like me.

As a born and bred Hoosier Lady still living in rural Indiana, each line of your piece brought me closer to the beauty that many from more "exotic" lands tend overlook.  Indiana really is a beautiful state....   )

I've never been to Indiana but this poem makes me wish I had.
