            What a Smile Can Do

If you meet someone whose spirits are low,
One you know whose pleasures are few,
Give them a smile and then you will know
What the magic of a smile can do.

If someone is downcast & unhappy with life
As if they are the only ones bearing a cross,
Feeling sorry for themselves after being in strife
And ever ready to argue the toss.

Point out to them the good things they enjoy,
Perhaps change the way of their living style,
If unwilling to change, their soul it will destroy
But above all, give them a generous warm smile.

Perhaps in a dream you see a beautiful girl
With her face enhanced by a beautiful smile,
Then the dream falters & flutters & fades away
Like the mists on some Ithacan Isle.

A smile is something that sticks in your mind,
It’s like a tonic that you cannot adjourn,
You would like to see a stranger being so kind
By giving you something back in return.

When you walk down the street & give a stranger a nod
And in return a friendly smile might make it’s debut
You naturally feel a warm feeling inside
For that is what a smile can do.

Thank you, dear Lindsay, for this wonderful reminder.
I have just had similar thoughts. No doubt our smiles create a positive reaction within ourselves and in others.
So I am determined to be a smiley today!

Have a wonderful day!

Love,
Margherita

I respect the distinct boundaries between sharing a smile and demanding one. I've had a total stranger instruct me to SMILE right after I'd received devastating news... that just made me feel worse. *S* But I do know how much difference a smile can make... and have even thanked people for brightening my day by sharing theirs. *S*

I enjoyed this very much, Lindsay... your picture and words both share smiles! *S*

lovely and wise, we live in western societies with mutual mood that don't tolerate smiles, smiles are guilty, what a shame...Thank you for the thoughtful and beautiful poem.

Lindsay,  You my friend are one of the best at making me smile.
And you are right,  It makes you feel better when you do.

This is a keeper.

Lindsay, a smile is one of the most priceless gifts you can give someone. It can indeed make a difference in another persons life. And, it doesn't cost a thing.
  I really like this poem.
