My grandpa is an old man,
but not as old as he used to be.
He did not live with dinosaurs,
or tigers the size of trees.
He didn't miss them by too much
according to the tales he told;
and I took his tales for gospel
'cause to me his word was gold.

He did not walk ten miles to school.
He rode a giant raccoon.
When they needed one more for baseball,
he had this pet baboon.
Said that ape could hit the ball so far
the Yanks persuaded him to sign.
Then he got so drunk with the Babe one night
he had to serve hard time.

(Chorus)
Cowboys, Injuns and Magic Dragons
at bedtime would give him a call.
Lumberjacks, whales and tall tales;
my grandpa knew them all.

The Sultan of Egypsy
was Ben Salami Ben.
He telephoned my grandpa
every Friday night at ten.
Told grandpa he should tell me
all about his magic rug.
He said he'd take me for a ride
if I gave grandpa a hug.

He had three big ol' pyramids
and a camel he called Joe;
just like the camel on the pack
of cigarettes grandpa smoked.
He nibbled only palm trees,
and he drank only pure sand.
I guess that is the good life
for an egypsy man.

(Chorus)
Cowboys, Injuns and Magic Dragons
at bedtime would give him a call.
Lumberjacks, whales and tall tales.
My grandpa knew them all.

I 'member the time that Superman
called grandpa for advice.
He wondered if he looked "sissy",
out fightin' crime in tights.
Grandpa pondered for a moment;
he liked to stop and think.
Then he told him not to bleach his cape
or it would turn bright pink.

Cowboys, Injuns and Magic Dragons
at bedtime would give him a call.
Lumberjacks, whales and tall tales.
My grandpa knew them all.

(Bridge)
They lived in mystic places
Pennsyltucky and Ohoho.
or in big foreign cities
like Amstertoodoggoneslow.

(Chorus)
Cowboys, Injuns and Magic Dragons
at bedtime would give him a call.
Lumberjacks, whales and tall tales.
My grandpa knew them all.

Your Grandpa's quite a character.
~ a kaleidscope of fun!
With his menagerie of comrades,
~ That's how the West was won!

He rode a magic carpet,
He rode a camel too.
He rode upon a racoon's back
~ And all of this is "True".

Eric, it would appear that the nut
didn't fall far from the family tree!

Linda Lou

Yo Eric,

Your Grandfather sounds like a fun person.  It's very nice you had a storyteller for a Grandfather.

Oh, I enjoyed this Eric!  I had a Grampa with VERY similar qualities, lol.  What a wonderful world of fantasy to grow up in. Blessed indeed with imagination. I think your Grampa handed it down beautifully! Very much enjoyed this!

Best wishes,

Always a pleasure to read your words. Yes, he was a great influence but I'm afraid I don't have the abilities he had.
However, the love is definitely there.

Thanks for the kind words.

Kit McCallum!!

Where in world have you been?
It's so nice to read your words after such a long time.
You know what I mean if you had a grandfather the same way.
Surely do appreciate your words after such a long lost time.
I remember so many of your absolutely delightful writes.....They were great!

Eric,

this is one of the most entertaining pieces I have read lately. I was thoroughly captured in its flow from the first line, the rhymes are not only good but actually fun too, rich in images and humour. I'll go fetch my coffee and come back for a second read. Among good pieces, this one, at least for me, stands out as your best. Keep'em coming!

I would love to hear this as a song - is it online somewhere Eric?  I printed it for the little boy down the way here, he is going to "dig" this big time!
