Every burning orange dawn,
after a fresh blanket of cloudy snow appears,
The blue passerine omnivore tip-toes
on my stained wooden ledge.

Blue-Jay mimics early greetings
with a high gull,
“Chick-chee! Chick-Chee!”
chirps my fuzzy companion.

He twitches his head in my direction
with black oceanic eyes,
Ice-flakes covering a charcoal beak,
Spiky aquamarine crown hair,
Sky-blue, white, and black patterned fur

The intelligent creature trusts me.
As the sun awakes in the East,
Past the valleys of oak woodlands,
Blue-Jay stabs and nips brown seeds.

His chest flattens in my presence,
Mimicking the Red-Shouldered Hawk,
Jeering gurgled noise at my face.
I began to trust his angelic vocals.

Five years flash by in an instant,
Family dies and friends travel away,
The silly animal still nips at his seeds
from the stained wooden ledge.

Now, he flies on my shoulder,
singing melodies into my ear,
When he is finished pecking
at peanuts and elderberries.

One grayish thundering evening,
Lighting strikes the oaks around me,
Roaring black clouds attack the Earth.
Ice crystals stab violently at my wood house.

The next day, light returns to the land.
Oaks and Pines splatter against the mud.
Squirrels sprint and black birds screech.
Where is my magnificent Blue-Jay?

Will my friend return to nip at my bare toes?
And chirp dulcet nothingness?
Has he left me alone in the depths of
naturalistic destruction?

My Blue-Jay never returned.

Sometimes, I imagine him soaring into
the abyss of heaven with choirs
of blue-angels dancing freely
to Nature’s whims…

Your depth of connectedness with nature is apparent in this tender write.
The scenery imagery is great, and you capture bird behavior masterfully.
We know these winged friends will leave us eventually, but the knowing never makes it less heartbreaking. I cherish and adore birds.
Into my library of favorites with this gem.
Thank you!
