It’s that last look I keep taking
That impedes me from forsaking
The love that once resided here
When now I tremble, filled with fear

At the door, I twist the handle
Then love flickers like some candle
Enchanted, I turn towards the light
And its allure arrests my flight

But my failures, multiplying
Shout I’m wasting time in trying
To mend the hurts, recapture hope
And without change, I cannot cope

With my dreams lying crushed, shattered
And my faith so badly battered
Why should it be that I’m so scared
To escape and vanquish despair?

I start forward, feeling bolder
But a glimpse over my shoulder
Reverses steps, I go back in
Vowing to start over again.

The title really matches the poem, but I think the end does find some resolve no?

Good read.

I find that I am less of a procrastinator as I 'mature' ~ although that is debatable! lol

I rely more on my gut instincts. I like how you overcome your temerity and go boldly forth! ~ or should I say go "backwards". Some movies are worth re-reeling and 'scene' from a new perspective!

Love to you, Southern One

I think "last looks" are human nature

I can really relate to this. Beautiful poem.

I just close my eyes when taking that last look so I am not tempted to go back into the shadows.   I see a positive in this one especially towards the end and that is always a very good thing.  Nice write.

suthern - I've found that starting over really isn't that bad at all. Of course it does take time, but time passes no matter what. Wish you the best...

Really hard to break away. The heart is hard to convince.
However, there simply comes a time when it's the right thing to do and the big step comes.
So very nicely expressed in these verses.

To quote Jack Johnson~

All dreams are made of real things..

and why are we here, and where do we go and how come it's  so hard.

Sigh~  You express yourself so well, suthern lady.

It's hard to leave the "comfortable and familiar" even if it's not the right place to be.  New paths can become very exciting when the steps we take connect to our inner knowing...even if our legs are wobbly.  I can really relate to your writing here.

Had to look up "waffling" and it surely is adequate for your wonderful introspective work, dear Ruth. And ... it feels like looking into a mirror!
