Beware the Woods!
by Linda L. Dowd

The faery folk of the Emerald Isle,
Have powers beyond mere mortals.
They lure them there ~ to kingdoms fair,
Thru’ elfin magic portals.

Beware the woods this time of year,
For the wee folk gather 'round.
~ Spinning their spells by fairy wells,
Where many a mortal's drowned.

Their spirits rise in clouds of mist,
~ Trilling the songs of ancients.
Please take care! Do not go there!
One's presence tries their patience!

If by chance, you see them dance,
~ You'd best be on your way!
For they'd take you down ~ beneath the ground,
And forever there ~ you'd stay!

The faery folk of the Emerald Isle,
Have powers beyond mere mortals.
They lure them there ~ to kingdoms fair,
Thru’ elfin magic portals.

Oh, Bruce! Do be wary of those "elfin magic portals". They are gates into the Netherworlds!

I'm pleased that you found my poem "lyrical". I was attempting to make it sound sort of sing-songy, faeryish-like!

It is nice to read words such as "transport" and "magic" used to describe a poem of mine! Thank you for 'saying' so!

Oh Linda what a wonderful imagination you have and then to put it all together in

such a magical tale about the faires. It
was a delight to read. Ten out of ten to my sweet Canadian Princess. Love you.

Excellent, Linda! It takes real talent to write in this genre, so classical, yet so new.

Loved every word, and the eerie magical feeling of it all.

There is always room in this hectic world for a bit of whimsy and this is, indeed, pleasant and readable.
If only we all had the benefit of a pinch of fairy dust ...

Linda,

A. Rackham is one of my favorite illustrators.  Well done in sharing his work with us.

Now for you, my fairy friend, you write magic.  The sun is shining bright on the untouched snow berms and I think I saw fairies dancing on their summits earlier today.  Yep, I did.  They were wearing little mukluks and kuspiks.

Love,
A

My dear Dolphina, "running" out of the woods must be quite a difficult thing for you to do with those little flippers of yours. Climb upon my back and I will fly you safely out of those woods!

What a delightful reply. I can see those fairies in my mind's eye as you have so vividly described them!

Yes, A. Rackham is a phenomenal illustrator. I was pleased to have found this particular illustration of his to accompany my poem.

Sunshiny One ~

"Brigadoon" is one of my favourite movies. In fact, years ago, my daughter gifted me with the colourized version of it.

At least the people in the movie were able to return every 100 years! However, in these fairy woods, once you're pulled into one of those elfin magic portals, you will never be seen again!!!

I liked this Linda.

Although I've always liked the idea of elves. Wise, fair, ancient and full of arcane power.

Yet this poem calls something to mind...

'Bring the harp and bring the lyre
Bring the torch to light the pyre
Bring the one who trod our ground
Bring the spade to dig his mound.'

Maybe they aren't so nice after all...

With love, Luke.

Never sigh for a better world, it's already composed, played and told.

Like we big people, the wee folk are of varying degrees of niceness ~ with some of them not so nice at all!
Consider yourself fore-warned if you ever venture near the woods at this time of year!

Thanks for sharing that little poem in your reply! ~ Ya see what I mean!!! lol

Take care my friend! Have a happy, healthy, and safe St. Patrick's Day!

Midnitesun ~

You're as smart as you look ~ and write!

When I was just a little colleen, while walking by the edge of a forest at dusk, I got stuck in some quicksand and began to sink, and sink. The more I struggled, the deeper down I was sucked. I screamed for help and fortunately I was extricated from that harrowing predicament. I would wager that that was an elfin magic portal that I happened upon and that if help hadn't arrived, I would have disappeared forever into the Netherworld!

Yes, indeed! You are wise to heed my warning! lol

Love and Irish blessings,
Linda O'Shaunnessy!
