Still

Be still, my heart tonight
blur all reflections in pure white light
though she's gone away from me
I still keep holding on
to the hem of her memory
tearing and slipping away
one day I won't even see her face
when my eyes close
so for now I drink in all I can taste
on her lingering beauty I will overdose

Keep cool and collected
even when you're like a toy neglected
rolling around useless all day
I still keep hoping that
she'll stumble back into view
beautiful, sweet as spring
to my heart she meant everything
every sunray in the sky
lights up the silver of her wings
on she flies, too far to hear me sing

Even while crumbling
you'll find me fumbling
for her eternal light
it's the only thing that will make me live again
set free the caged bird and breathe all love in
I'll never give in

And even when all romantic dividends come up nil
I never learn, I keep on loving her still

And still, and on until forever
I keep the eternal flame lit for her
and sometimes I don't know why
but still I keep a hold on
the thin thread of her memory
she won't keep much longer
one day I'll lose all inner sight of her
but until that day
I'll love her vacant, fueling fire
on her smile I will paint my desires

And even while drying
you'll find me crying
out for evidence of her
she's the only one that could make me whole
pull out the rose thorns out of my fractured soul
love takes its toll

But the chances that she'll return are next to nil
but I never learn, I keep on loving her still
loving her still
love her still

Zach, if I mentioned the name
Whispering Bill, I'm fairly sure
you might now know of whom I speak of,
but the title of your poem was a hit song
of the same name. So of course, I had the
tune going through my head as I read this.

His song was as sad as your poem...

which means you did well.

This is beautiful, and very touching.  As I read, the sentiments were all so familiar, as I'm sure they are to a lot of us.  Thank you for the thoughts, so well put...

I don't think you'll ever let her memory slip away. A poignant, heart felt write, Zach.

Memories as lovely as the ones you have of her can keep you warm when winds blow cold.
You expressed your feelings so beautifully. To be able to do that is a gift.

May your gentle, loving heart still be open to love again when it comes knocking at your door.

Holding on to the hem of her memory!

That is a lovely thought and your poem is an endearing heartache.

Fine writing, soul drifter.
