I gaze at you, and softly sigh; and in my mind I drift away
to a secret place, where hopes and dreams lie safe
from trammels of the day.
A place where I can tend the flame I hold for you, so secretly;
a place where I can quell the pain...
Oh, Lady...

Within this secret place, I sift the hopeless dreams that come, and pass;
a small boy at a sweetshop window... nose pressed tightly to the glass.
But, I am no tongue-tied, stumbling child unschooled in sensibility...
but sense, by love, is soon defiled...
Oh, Lady...

This Ancient Mariner's Albatross, called unrequited love, has been
my private ghost, for oh, so long;
perhaps you've felt... perhaps you've seen
the black despair, with velvet claw, come calling, surreptitiously;
a word, a smile to show you care?
Oh, Lady...

Is it, but just my foolish hope I see soft-mirrored in your eyes?
Your thoughts are veiled, l cannot tell; no hint... no clue to recognise.
The chill, insistent seeds of doubt twine round...
and then you smile at me,
and my resolve comes crashing down...
Oh, Lady...

If, by some chance, you glance my way, and see my gaze... a world apart;
Remember then, these few soft words... wrote by the hand... spoke by the heart.
Weave me an exquisite spell from which, I never can be free...
what might have been, were I more bold?
Oh, Lady.

So, the time has come to be BOLD, dear Windhover!

A very beautifully constructed poem, with a captivating content.
