This is not really a song just a tribute to the greatest influence in my life.
My parents split up when I was six years old and my mother did her best to raise me the best way she knew how. It wasn't easy as my father skipped off to Quebec to avoid paying any alimony. Never saw him again for 13 years.

"His Master's Voice" wound up to spin is talking about the old RCA Victor floor model wind up gramaphones where the dalmation dog was sitting on the floor listening to the sound come out of the big speaker horn. That was RCA's signature advertising phrase.
There was one of those at my great grandmother's house and I was fascinated by it as a kid.
I knew my mother was greatly influenced by the romantic music of the time so therein lies the mention of the original music machines.
Life was simpler then but also open hearted honest people were easily fooled by confidence men (con men) Sad that the world has lost a lot of it's integrity and peace.

The calm of dawn a mother's touch
the breath of life her endless love.
Her open dreams and growing watch
are mother's gifts I never lost.

Like a mystic moon she knew my mind,
like a seasoned poet her reasons rhymed.
The burden light I towed the line
for mother's love I made the time.

His master's voice wound up to spin
                played yesterday and fashioned friends
                and mother's breast held fantasies
were playgrounds where young hearts were free
and Jolson's made me love you lines
were heard when new born infants cried.

Dear mother's care pursued on call
like sun shines through a waterfall,
like snow melts in suns of spring
                and safety under mother's wing.

                Lying words disguised as wise
fail on mother's love that never dies.
                Her breast loved champion alive
with mother's love the guiding light.

His masters's voice wound up to spin
played love songs to young mothers when
golden dawns brought days of peace
                and candlelight brought easy sleep.
True rhapsodies flowed through the point
                with analogs for mother's joy.

Yo Eric,

I remember those RCA Victor wind-up Victrolas.  Unfortunately for me it brings back bad memories of being stuffed away in a cold attic with one.

I'm sure this one will work for most people.

Thank you Midnite.
I'm always glad when it affects someone that way. We all have those feelings.
Kinda makes you think of Marge, she was like a mother figure to us all.

That's sad Bobby.
I hope it works for others.
Despite those memories of your past you became an excellent down to earth realist writer and that's good to keep things on the straight and narrow. We all need that sometimes.

I too remember those days and of course the RCA dog on the floor really whacked my memory circuit.  Such a wonderful tribute and definitely one to make any mother proud.

Oh Eric that is one of your very best poems
that really touched the heart strings. It

brought back so many fond memories of another time and place and I thoroughly

enjoyed it. Top accolades my friend.

ethome, Date me also, for I too remember having the old wind up "Victrola" (as we called it) sitting in our living room. I think it was orginally my granparents. I loved winding it up and playing the recordings.  One was someone laughing, just laughing, I loved it and laughed along with it every time. Thank you for the memory. latearrival

A wonderful poem in honor of your dear Mother, dear Eric. I could have expressed the same thoughts for mine.

And she did certainly plant within you the passion for music!

Love,

Hello Late
Yes, many of us remember the old Victrolas.
They were amazing for the time. Big at the turn of the last century. How times have changed, some good ways some not so good.
I appreciate the read and the response.

Thanks for the kind words.
Yes, she did implant a love for music although she never pushed the idea.

Mother's are so great aren't they?

You'll have to bring this back for Mother's Day...

This is awesome. I also appreciate the history behind the poem...and I could see
your mother's spellbound enchantment with
the old songs.

And, Eric, FYI...I saw your note on my poem...I've only been here in the blue pages 11 months longer than you.

Eric, the love that your mother instilled in you, you share so selflessly with others.
You are a very warm, compassionate human being. God bless you ~ and your mother. Hers was a difficult row to hoe, but it is apparent that she tended her garden well.

Thank you Linda, you're very kind indeed.

Did you know that those dog statues are worth a lot of money these days.
RCA Victor didn't make and sell that many of them.
I'd like to find one but I probably couldn't afford it.

Always good to hear from you.

ethome - mine split also at the same age as you. Unfortunitly for me it wasn't good, however, I made it. Wish you the best, you're quite a person and writer...
