standing on a shadow's lace

Mister

mister...
would that porch be havin' a swing?
and can you build a limb trellis for morning glories?
do you like chicken and dumplings?
and have you ever heard of crowder peas?
and how is your out loud reading?
do your hands reach out tender in darkness and in light?
and do you cotton to tomato sandwiches for lunch?
can you drink sweet tea sweaty from a mason jar?
do you know what a clothes pin is and what it’s for?
have you ever rowed a boat in muddy water?
gathered wood for an outdoor fire?
do you have a straw hat for berry pickin’ in the heat?
does the thought of dust on your car bother you?
does the idea of dancing to crickets interest you?
and could you stand my singin’?
for I am south and I’m just wondering

"I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad."
— Joni Mitchell

Helen, I don't want to bore anyone by repeating what I said in Krawdad's poem, and I am sure that you will see it there.

These echoes and their reverberations are beyond beautiful.  I can't wait for the next ones in the series and will be very disappointed if there are no more.  When they eventually end, please repost them all in one thread.

Perhaps the two of you should write a book of poetry together.

This is so authentically poetic and captivating.
And brought memories ... my stepfather couldn't stand my singing. That says so much! To sing together would be just perfect!

Wonderful read, as is Krawdad's.

Yo 1slick_lady,

I love this one, except for the "south" thing.

I'm with you on clothes pins, those dryer things are a device of the devil, I wouldn't have one anywhere near me.

You have made me hungry... not just for tomato sandwiches, but for home. *S*

Pure delight you've penned! *S*

do you know what a clothes pin is and what it’s for?

apparently my new husband thinks they are for clippin' packages of opened food to put in the freezer
