He dreams of the cool, gray dawn
seeping through the faded, pull down
blinds, and the crowing of the roosters
in the hen yards throughout the neighborhood,
and the smell of coffee he couldn’t yet drink,
and the aroma of country bacon, sizzling
in the old black skillet, and the sound
of eggs cracking, and the raspy
noise of mother stoking the hot coals
in the cast-iron stove . . .

He is that boy who vanished along the way
to manhood, who disappeared in the fog
of change, and is now but a wisp of memory
fading to darkness in the lengthening shadows,
slowly losing his grip on the last fragile twig
jutting from the wall of a crumbling cliff . . .

It must be heaven that awaits his fall, for hell
is what thrust him beyond the edge,
and made him think himself to be a poet . . .

When I was a sophomore in college, my girlfriend said I was a type of Rimbaud, and I don't think she meant it as a compliment.

Kudos... from a wisp of memory who thinks herself a poet.

Yo Art,

No, she probably didn't mean it as a compliment.

He was a bad guy, but a good poet.

More than a wisp of memory and a thought Ida, but a true poet you are, and it is good to have met and become friends along this way.

That's what I like about you, Bobby---no frills, nothing wasted, but blunt, right to the point!

Many happy returns,
