I was mesmerized when I fell in love.
I was tantalized when I dated her.
I was mortified when I said, I do!
I was agonized when I divorced her.
I was demoralized when I stood on the edge
of a high precipice, pretending to be free.

My heart is heavy in lament of loss, beauty,
tender youth—hers, falling down a bottomless shaft.

Alas, the love that would forever last—gone,
and all that’s left—echoes of silence,
those empty words, “I’m sorry”.

Thanks, Eric. Yes, life is tough, but what can you do but live it, and try to live it well. I proposed to her on a dazzling, starry night on a lake shore in 1969. Divorced now for 20 years. Three wonderful kids, and we get along, but everything is forever changed.

Enjoyed your reminiscing, dear Arthur. Every now and then we need to ponder the past, without ever losing sight of the Now though.

This is great Art, often when we understand women it is too late, we don't care when things are easy but they notice everything...This poem touch me in a special way...Thank you for sharing this moving piece.

Yes, what you say is true. "I'm sorry" are very empty words. I never say them.

I am sorry for your pain, Art. I disagree with you and Bobby about the words, "I am sorry" being empty. Things are so much worse without them. They don't change what happened, but they bring a little comfort. Often the recipient says they are meaningless, but the same recipient would more than likely complain if they weren't said. Of course, a lot depends on how much is meant by them - that is the real crux of the matter.

Thanks for your comment OwlSA. I agree about the treatment of "I'm sorry". I think emptiness was an emotional response to the limits on what one can do to undo harm, no matter how deeply he feels. For a long time I felt that my first and only wife's youth and beauty could have been better shared with another. Thus I saw it as falling down a bottomless shaft. Thank heaven I am not despairing, though. Life is, I believe, manageable by those who have the will to manage it.

Yes, Bobby, "I'm sorry" can be the easy way out. True contrition of heart serves better, and I think the "injured" party comes to know the difference between the words and the true depth of feeling.

Hi, Margherita. Yes, those three wonderful kids give meaning to it all when I tend to fall prey to those moments of regret. Thankfully, they are the sun around which both myself and my former wife evolves, and their success is our mutual "righteous" pride.
