It’s a hot rainy night.
Mom, Bones, Butch, and Wawa
are sitting on the walk-up floor,
right beside the roaring El.

There’s no blinds,
or curtains in the windows.

People riding the El
can look right in.

That doesn’t bother,
Mom, and Bones
never we’re much
for privacy.

The only light in the room
is a bare light bulb,
dangling from an electric cord.

They’re all sitting there,
half naked,
playing a game of Tonk.

Bones is the dealer.
He’s not working tonight.

Bobby

Yo dear Ida,

Of course he won--big money, big money.  Are you a Tonk player?

I get a peaceful feeling out of this, dear Bobby. This kind of togetherness brings a welcome break to the usual obligations. I understand the pleasure to be open to the citylife and feeling good about it.

I am always the last to close the shutters, I love to see my surroundings.

Love,
Margherita

Thanks dear Margherita,

You have the right idea Hon.  The city scene is wonderfully alive and human.  At least I think so.

Thanks Eric,

It's something like "knock rummy".  It's played a lot in prisons.  Since there are so many graduates here in the hood, it's popular here.

Here are the rules. "http://www.pagat.com/rummy/tonk.html"

Some people make up their owwn rules.

Bobby

Yo James,

That's great.  Stay away from those guys.  They might be from the hood.

It's a nice game.  When I was a kid, my girlfriends brother cheated me out of five bucks.

What could I say?
