ALONE
1991

Perhaps
it was intended
that I walk
alone.

Perhaps
there is none
who can feel
song
and sun
and colour
and sweetness
of hay
and
honey,
as I.

Perhaps
one greygreen autumn day
a rugged stranger
will,
with silent footfall,
and respect
for forest creatures,
come wandering
through
the green mists
of my garden trees
and
perhaps
we will understand
each other,
and
perhaps
not.

You have beautifully captured solitude in these three pieces.  Enjoyed these tremendously... kat

Thanks, Karilea.     I stopped looking long ago.  Too many rugged strangers were just not the right one.

I was reminded of this and the other 2 poems on Solitude after reading Peter Griffin's poem, called something to the effect of "Occasionally I have a visitor".

Thanks, Bruce, for your kind words.

Thanks, latearrival.  Yes, solitude is a luxury.

Ahhh, to be perfectly matched is such a dream, but then it seems opposites attract even more!

There is comfort and bliss combined in dreaming like you did, the words painted wonderful images, dear Diana!

Love and hugs.

Thanks, Margherita.  Personally, I am not so keen on the opposites.  Yes, there is comfort and bliss in dreaming forwards and backwards.  Thank you for seeing what I tried to paint.

You've captured the state of 'aloneness' very poetically, and have avoided falling into the 'trap' of suggesting that being alone is the same as being lonely.

I like your reply, Kacy. It is just what I think about "alone" and "lonely." I love all three of your poems, Diana and understand what you are saying completely.

Thank you, Kacy.  You are so right about the two (lonely and alone) not being the same.

Thank you Ida.  I just know you do (understand about what I meant).

Dear Owl, thank you for sharing this beautiful write

perhaps
we will understand
each other,
and
perhaps
not.

this is quite philosophical and moving....Everyone seek for understanding and support, this is called love and it is the most reasonable thing.

have a nice day

Sometimes walking alone is shuffling along, head down and heart heavy. But walking side by side can be a dreadful march if the companion is wrong.

Until someone makes you want to skip, walk in peace with yourself. *S*

Yann, you certainly have understood a dilemma that everybody experiences, but few people recognise or can put into words.  Sadly, very few people "get" me, and that, very little of the time - but perhaps everyone feels that way - or perhaps it is only the deep thinkers  that do  .  .  .

Sue, thank you for your understanding.

Oh, boy!  Have you got it right, Ruth, or have you got it right! - except that being alone doesn't have to be shuffling with head down and a heavy heart.  One can CHOOSE to dance (as a double negative, in other words, to avoid sadness) or one can delight in dancing one's freedom spontaneously for its own sake - whether joyous and energetic - or slow and melancholic!  Personally, I understand myself very well - and myself understands "I" equally well, and we get on very well together!
