From where I stand, I see the thaw
and on the frozen floor
the sun upon the glowing crust
is glistening wet and pure.

Upon the surface of rolling hills
the glossy snowdrifts ride;
there is no place or living thrill
like greenwoods sprouting eyes.

A mild scent is on the air;
I lift my head and breathe
out of the sky I seem to hear
a calling on the breeze.

The sound of God and life and wild
the sound of earth that grows
out of the wind that whispers by
the sound of trees that moan.

I know now why it is I care;
I bend my head and pray;
I cannot drive them from my heart
these teardrops that I make.
.
.
.
.
Then I wonder about clear cutting forests? About how much nature they destroy!!

King pinewood brimmed a rocky crag
no finer crown against the sky,
the sun that lit the weathered jag
pronounced his lofty size.

Handsome and tall he stood
grand ruler of the slope.
A sovereign lofty scented wood
of anchient kindred pulp.

The clouds rolled in the wind did blow
no sign of warming cheer.
King Pinewood's roots upon the stone
held firm and never veered.

His blessed offshoots drooped with snow
and ice clung to his roots.
Proud monarch maintained his pose
never failing to salute.

Then one solemn frozen day
upon his trunk a shadow grew
a motored spinning toothy blade
rose up to run him through.

With coarse, snapping, grateing sounds
proud sultan down he came.
His throne usurped he smashed the ground
his breaking cries in vain.

With stately mast and branches strewn
down over pithy rocks
Old King Pinewood's time came due
to serve a lesser god.

Oh, gosh, dear Eric, you made me shiver to the bones with this impressively intense and heartwrenching write!
I do so know what you felt! They have done this to my favorite pine tree in front of my living room, last year. I almost fainted when I realized ...
This is an awesome write. Thank you!

Love,
Margherita

Eric,

this is gorgeous, daunting, so vivid that a sparkling clear image filled my mind without the least effort. Truly impressive.

Yo Eric,

This is very fine work.  Are you a lumberjack or what?  It takes me back to my chainsaw days in West Virginia.

A powerful write, Eric. The lesser god too often fails to think of the fact that he is, indeed, a lesser god who shall fall like the princes!

I'm working my way toward getting to read and know the fine poets here.

Best wishes,

I am still getting over the "lonely crunch of the toast" and now you have the sultan being " run through"...just wonderful stuff.

Hearing this poem made me happy. I love trees and nature itself. After school I am always looking at the trees and how beautiful they are standing beyond time itself.
