she sits silently in the room, no longer sporting those
whose lives have bent and turned down their very diff'rent ways
she calmly rests and proudly shows her oh, so well-worn bones
eased now from burdens of lengthened times and faded night-long days

she sits silently in the room, while mem'ries fade to gray
and little girls grow, having children of their own
her bones still creak and welcome those who've gone away
and love displayed is evident as it is warmly shown

she sits silently in the room...the din has turned to dusk
whose setting suns now shine their rays on memories and cheer
though now unsought and seldom used, her bones now fill with dust
awaiting those she loved and rocked and held so very near

proud bones still make the noises of those long since bygone times
if only she's remembered in more than tribute rhymes

sit strongly, sit silently, my gently motioned friend
and we'll keep you, for we must, until the very end

An interesting conceit (i.e. an extended metaphor) you've penned here. Beautiful imagery, engaging both in the lines and between-the-lines. Mark

How beautifully you inspire each other, you and your daughter, dear Steaven.

A beautiful, sweetly melancholic write, holding joyful memories.

You made me think of our rocking chair. I think we treated it unfairly ... it must be lonely down in the cellar (but we had to put in a little bed for our grandsons when they visit).

Love,
Margherita

mmmm... how I love that chair!     Isn't it funny how things can come to mean so much through the years?  I'm so glad you keep her, I suppose she'll even be around to cradle a third generation!

loved this.. All my children were given a rocking chair for their first born. This past summer I went to Connecticut  to attend the baby showers for two new great grand children and yes they too were to have rocking chairs from me. I usually chose large size chairs so the Dads could also make use of them. These last two I let the Grandson's and their wives choose. They both chose the platform rockers. Large enough  for Dads again.

A thought came to me a few years ago as I  realized I was beginning to "age". I would love some one to rock me to sleep for that one last time. I hope I begin to grow thin  and frail so that could happen and I would fit on someone's lap in one of those large rockers.  latearrival

And now you've made Shelerella's post even more poignant with these added images. We have three rocking chairs in our home - one we purchased from a friend [an antique] and two from my husband's family which saw several generations of family members. All are most comfortable, and rock through time, carrying the most intimate memories.

Thank you, Steaven!

Amazing how much love and memories there are in an inanimate object isn't it. I still have the rocker we used for our babes and it is priceless. Great write Steaven. Take care and Have fun. Steve

What a treat to read this 'ode' to your family rocking chair, especially after having read your daughter Shelerella's fine poem "that old rocking chair".

I see that talent runs in the family!!!

May the chair Rock on for Ages!

Mark,
Thank you kindly for your deep and insightful remarks...they are not only appreciated, but helpful...thank you for taking the time to stop by

Margherita,
"A beautiful, sweetly melancholic write, holding joyful memories"...I could not have described it better...you saw this one with your soul...hey, and you gotta make room for the g-kids...

shel,
third generation....oh, my...I think I passed out on the very thought of that...

late,
First, just let me say thank you for your generous and kind comments...a rocking chair for each?  ...now THAT is a great tradition...when we had our first child (I was very young) and assumed that all new mothers needed a rocking chair...so, I brought one home from the furniture store in which I worked.  My wife (unbeknownst to me) got motion sickness from rocking.  So, I became the rocker in the new rocker.  My problem was I never paid attention to the babies like I should and wound up letting them chew on the back...oh well...they never lacked for a teether...

Sunshine,
I think that rocking chairs may hold more memories than any other piece of furniture in our homes...you are blessed to have three...generational tributes to the love of family...treasure them...forever...thank you!

Steve,
You sound like you are the kind of father that enjoyed his rocking chair as much I did...thank you for reading and commenting

Eric,
Thanks for your exceptionally kind comment...inspired...yes...blessed...definitely...thank you

Linda,
Yes, as I tell them all...talent always runs down hill (and I live at the bottom of that hill)   Thank you for being so nice.  Someone should write a song...maybe call it "Rock [on] of Ages"...whatta ya think?
