Wooden pillars braced his back
as he cradled me in his arms-
those sweet memories only in photographs.

More little ones came and he returned
to that chair that cradled us all so well.

She sat in silence caressing a child,
he'd rest his head from a weary day's work.

We'd jump and play and bump and rock
and mar and stain and scratch-
that trunk still sturdy and swaying firm
welcomed a family of six.

Now the numbers multiply
and in the corner waits
mamma's gold old rocking chair.

Save that spot for me.

My grandfather has a bed that's suspended from chains on his back porch. This made me think of taking naps out there. Those were some good times.

Greatly enjoyed, well worded, and concise.

Oh, how I love this. I wrote on steavenr's
answer to this and then had to come find you. I always felt there should be a rocking chair in every home that has a child living there. Hence all of my six children were given a large rocking chair upon the birth of their first born. latearrival

What a comforting and highly nostalgic piece of writing. It conjures up so many wonderful memories of my own.
I had my own little childhood rocker which both of my daughters used as well.
When I had come home from the hospital, after giving birth to my first born, a rocking chair was waiting for me in the nursery ~ a surprise from my husband. On the dresser was a new music box with a mother rocking her baby. I used to love rocking away in both of my grandmothers' rocking chairs and would often imagine me all grown up and rocking my baby to sleep.

Thank you for this very special poem.

Giving you a warm hug and a huge smile,

EA

Wonderful memories.
I remember some of the same feelings and the similiar reflections.

Very nice work!

What a great idea to give rocking chairs to your children upon having their firstborn.  I hope to inherit the one I speak of so fondly (that's a hint, dad! )  I'm so glad that many of you have similar sweet memories, it's truly a blessing!
