Bones Gets Robbed

It’s a hot August morning.
Bones is standing on the corner.

A big car drives up,
there’s an older woman
with white hair driving it.

She motions Bones over.
Asks him to get in the car.

Bones says to himself—
“Well, why not?”

The woman drives him
out into the country.
Bones doesn’t like that much,
he likes to stay in the city.

You really can’t trust
people from the country
that drive into the city
to pick up city kid.

It turns out
what the woman wants,
is for Bones to clean her house.

She says she won’t
drive him back to the city
until she’s satisfied
with his cleaning work.

She works Bones all day,
scrubbing floors,
cleaning windows,
and doing other household
chores.

She wears Bones out.

Every time she thinks
he’s not working hard,
or fast enough,
she jabs him in the ribs
with a stick.

She works Bones
until well past midnight,
gives him twenty dollars,
and dumps him out
back in the hood.

Bones says never again
will he allow old,
white-haired women
to pick him up.
