My father sent me an envelope today

It lies upon the table with seductive malice
And a sort of vanilla white allure
It’s contents bulge outward dangerously

I already know what it holds; Inwards sits
$500 in greasy, enticing twenties
I’m half-surprised they didn’t stain the envelope

I try to look away, but it forces my eyes
And like a crystal ball
Shows me all the dirty ways it could strut
Into the palm of a store clerk

All I have to do is surrender my pride
