As I rolled off a cresting sea
And smartly sped along my way;
I thought I saw a fleeting glint.
A hint at end of day.

A Distant vessel passed me by,
She swayed upon the wind and sea.
Far off I saw her masthead light
That swung by night to lee.

I glimpsed in hope, a moment there,
To know the cant that set her dance,
But darkness overcame my glee
For meeting we might chance.

Perhaps we'd passed by light of day
On jaunty waves in tipped salute?
I'd surely known the sum incurred
That spurred her to this route.

Does she not know I'd tarried close
In empty sea by way of steer?
I pondered as she passed me by
If she knew I was near.

If we sould pass this way again
On pleasured wave in knowing meet,
I hope she shares a greeting true
And thinks it too a treat.

Some people paint on the shells of turtles...

you need no such adornment.

This is lovely.

I'm no expert--but I do believe it scans!

Salute!  I hope she comes back by your patch of ocean sometime soon.

What a beautiful concept, a turtle bonding with a sea vessel!  I LOVE it.  I couldn't make out whether it was a ship or a boat, but I don't think ships have masts (but what do I know, a landlubber), but as long as Turtle recognises it when he/she next sees it, that is the main thing - but was trying to get my visuals accurate.

Hope to read more from you.

Thank you all for commenting and the warm welcome.

Serenity: Who paints on turtle shells? The cads! lol!

Pilgrimage: Alas, a patch of sea is as elusive as life itself.

Steavenr: Yes and a good vision of this ballad's intent.

BC & woodtic: Thank you.

Owl: I think I like your comments the most. A turtle bonding with a sea vessel is hilarious and unexpected. I love it! I also never gave consideration to the fact that I didn't describe the ships passing in the night. I didn't think it relavent, but indeed, it would be to the reader.

I've heard that sea turtles can get confused by lights in the darkness.  It seems you've stayed on course here.  Nicely done, turtly one..

Turtle, thank you for the explanation.  Now that I know it was a ship, I've got my visuals in line.  I am sure that the ship was so delighted to be communicated with by a turtle that it will most certainly be looking out for its turtle friend the next time it passes that way.

I am an animal lover par excellence - all those that ever walked, swam, hopped, slithered, flew and anything-elsed the planet - they are all so much easier to understand than most humans.  There are many humans I like too.
