A gentle, spring rain
and the smell of lilacs
reach out from the past
to remind me
of another place and time.
I see myself sitting
by the window of the bus
as it stops to pick up
the students of Liberty School.
My mind is recording memories
for future use...
Perhaps a poem
about the row of red tulips
in that yard across the street.

I love the melancholy longing in this...almost like I'm sitting there looking out that window myself...gotta go...my mind is calling in the memories...

Yo dear Ida,

Nice one.  You're lucky to have such nice memories of school.

My goodness, you have pulled a page from my memory to remind me of another place and time~

Such nostalgic thoughts in your penning~

Ida - now that I've read this I'm going to be very disappointed if you don't write a poem about those roses. Just so happens they are my favorite. Waiting to see the poem...

Ida,

I loved this poem - it took me back to my frist day of school.  I was so excited and ran onto the school bus ahead of my brother and two of my older sisters.  When I got off at the school, I forgot my pack with my lunch and tablet and pencil.  I was devastated and didn't know what to do - all of a sudden my brother ran up with my stuff and took me to class.  He has always been my hero.

Thank you for bringing this back to me.

Love,
A

I thought I was in South Africa, and suddenly I was in a bus long ago in the USA, taking in the changing views from the window and excitedly looking forward to a day at school . . . and now I will be looking for a poem about a row of red tulips.  Thanks, that was both fun and nostalgic.

And then, Alison, I was in Alaska, experiencing your first day of school elation and the devastation at having left your precious school pack on the bus, and your relief when your brother brought it to you -  and the tears flow for your hero brother because I know . . .

Thank you all for reading and commenting. It's funny how such a simple memory can stay in your mind for years.

A fine, nostalgic 'slice of life' write (and comment/reply by Marge) that I somehow (unfortunately) missed initially ...

MUCH sustained applause!!
