Come on down and pay your dues To the good ole red, white and blue Come say hi to Uncle Sam In your words, He's the man Come on now, respect the system Its full of morals, God, and wisdom Your Ma's and Pa's can pay the taxes And we'll whip out our battle axes We love welfare, Medicare, love to share Homeless, old, and poor, Help 'em all, we don't care (As long as we get our 10% in our pockets) C'mon kiddies, gather 'round where flags and eagles can be found Everybody listen here Don't you fret, don't you fear We,ve got it all under control buried in a deep, deep hole Come on down for the cure If you're normal, we'll help for sure If your weird don't even bother up and down, colder, hotter Thats the way the trends go Ya gotta keep up with the times, don't ya know? if you don't like America so ****ing much why don't you move to red china!!has the "MAN" done you such an injustice that you feel the need to write this unnecessary and unimaginative pile of crap?be honest with yourself for one second,do you complain about this because it really affects you in so intensly or because you just want to be pissed off at something. |

I don't agree with either of you..he shouldnt move it is his country and moving would only be a quick fix and it is the country and its way of thinking that needs to change! i fully agree with what he was saying in the poem..Americans do have an extremely superficial view on life..take famous people for example...there are alot more good looking ones than ugly..and its sad that our society should think like that...how are u supposed to respect ur country when it doesnt respect you and ur individuality? |

By the way I'm Australian and I can still see America's superficial views and mentality from the other side of the world and if it didnt affect him he wouldnt have written such a powerful poem about it! |

OK first of all, id like to clarify that im a girl.....second of all, wow, i didn't realize i generated so much controversy.... but sugar.....your are obviously a product of the country you so vehemently defend....and you just bashed australia worse than i did America, and you don't live there so how can you judge? you are as hypocritical as they come.....Taeira...thanks...... Sugar why don't you relax a bit? First of all if you would like to go into history, the first settlers in America were also criminals and other trash from England. Once America was full that;s when they started shipping other criminals to Australia. So before you start criticizing other countries look at your own! I agree with this poem, America has a lot of problems! But then again so do the other countries, so it's up to the individual to decide where he/she wants to live! Good poem SysDecay! Good piece of work SD, and well crafted. Sugar, you have the right to agree or disagree with anything posted here. I object to your personal attacks, however. As for England, I think they have enough problems of their own without wanting us back. Got a broom handy? I believe your doorstep is no cleaner than ours. By the way...I'm old enough to remember Twiggy, England's own emaciated little beauty. |

I personally think this poem is SD's best poem I've read yet, and I've enjoyed most of the other ones too, although I feel her views are a bit too negative consistently. Anyways though, On the defense of SD, this is America, and most Americans are superficial. Most people are superficial for that matter, but America is definitely at least as bad as any other nation, probably worse. Also, to Sugar*Star: You spend so much time defending the U.S.A. but you apparently seem to know nothing about what it's about. America is about Freedom. One of the founding reasons of America was to create a nation that is better than any other. And for the moment, in a lot of respects, we have that. On the other hand, in a lot of respects we don't. Therefore, until the U.S. is a utopia, the 1st Amendmend covers Freedom of Speech, giving people the right to say what they want, including things that both bash the U.S. government, and the U.S. culture as well. One influential writer of the time of the U.S. Revolution was Voltaire. I'm not sure that this quote is exact, but I'm quoting it anyway, but he said, "I do not agree with a word you say, but I shall defend to the death, your right to say it." This is one of the ideas the framers of the Constitution had in mind when they created that document. Look at it this way. If there hadn't been people like SD around throughout time. The United States would have never been born. The world would never have seen the idea of democratic or republican style rule. We would still, in 1999, be under the rule of the English Monarchy, and the English Monarchy, would most likely be tyrannical, as most monarchies throughout time became. We owe our existence to people like John Locke, Voltaire, Thomas Paine, Ben Franklin, and Systematic Decay, people who don't just take what the government gives them as right because afterall, it's the government. They question it. That's what a real American is. Someone who will question there government, and make democracy work for them. Otherwise, why not go back to Monarchs and Despots ruling us all. taeira- i don't want to step into the battle here, but i don't think what you said about america was any better than what sugar* said about america and your country. we are all lucky to live in democratic countries, such as america and austraila. anyone who has studied american history at all should know that it could be much worse. SD's problem is society, not so much her country (i hope that i'm right about that ) america does do some noble things. we are basically the police of the world, always defending some nameless third world country that will probably turn against us one day, but we do it because that is the american way. maybe bill clinton did get oral sex from monica lewinsky, but that is the business of our country (i never thought that i would be this damn patriotic, but i feel almost insulted here). clinton also improved our economy so much that our country is richer than it's been in a while. don't think that austraila's prime minister doesn't have any skeletons in the closet... we all do. bill clinton is the social pariah of our country because we are so busy trying to make ourselves feel better that we have to find someone else to blame (history repeating itself: think of second generation puritans). there is a huge problem with society. i have been a victim of its cruelty many a time, but that is society, and our country is not that bad.also- i am from kentucky and i resent the yo and ya'll crack. i take a college level english class as a junior in high school. and i can assure you those words are not as prevalent in american culture as you may think them to be now- before anybody else makes any assumptions on a country they haven't been to (god and i thought that sugar*'s comment was a joke) let's visit them first. Actually, I've heavily involved with politics, as a member of the ACLU, and several other political organizations on campus. And one thing that bothered me was roxanne saying Clinton helped out economy. He hasn't hurt our economy, yet. But I think his prescence may eventually do so. Any intelligent economist will tell you that changes in the economy in a country the size of the United States generally causes actual effects about 4 to 8 years after the changes are implemented. And although Clinton has been in for about 7 years now. The economy started on the uprise at the end of the Bush admininstration and continued upward until now. That would imply that the real people responsible thusfar for the economic rise are Reagan and Bush. Now if the economy continues to rise, then Clinton will have helped the economy as well. But it is my honest opinion that our nation will soon undergo a recession due to a lot of laws implemented under Clinton such as NAFTA, which caused an immense amount of American Jobs to go across borders to the south to Mexico and other nations in Central America that are covered in NAFTA. Anyway, I could be wrong about that stuff. Although I'm very involved in politics, I am an English/Music Ed. major, so I may not be the best to predict future economics. But that's my theory. Anyway I too am surprised how much I'm sticking up for my country!..but I just couldn't let all those insults slide...and what's this about u being the police of the world?..thats rather conceited and America is the police of the world..god help us. I really think that for such a 'powerful' and rich country America is extrememly poor. Not as far as wealth but as far as the social scene and human interaction and stuff. It is a well said saying throughout the world >'only in America' and it's true...different things I hear about America disgust me. It used to be the place i wanted to go to more than anywhere in the world..but there's no way I ever wanna go there. My best friend went there a few weeks ago and she said she has never felt so scared for her life before. She said it was the scariest place she has ever been to. I know i shouldn't judge before I have been there myself but all the things i see on the news about the USA just reinforces my already weakend view. I know that of course all American cities and people aren't bad..im not that naive...but there seems to be a lot that are..anyway like I said before..I really don't want to get into a big fight over our countries...but I will stand up to anyone who says anything bad about Australia. The scariest thing of all is that we are supposebly 10 years behind the USA so if that's what we are gonna look like/ act like in 10 years well we are in for bgi trouble. I'm not going to aplogise for anything I've said because I dont apologise for my feelings thanx ------------------ ~live life like there's no tomorrow, because regret is the ultimate punishment~ |

Well, I do want to clarify that I am talking about society in my poem. In theory, the American values work....freedom of speech, freedom from tyranny and opression, but the true American way has become I'll get hwat I want and F*CK everyone else. David Bowie stated it well with one line: "I'm afraid of Americans." My society can be a scary place. I'm not so much scared of the people I'm surrounded by, or what they can do to me, but I'm scared that someday I may become just like them. |

okay, here goes my nationalism again 1) america has fought in many wars that even involve their people, thus i would say that they are attempting to help. america has nothing to gain from such a thing. 2) so i was right about the meaning of this poem (YES!!! ) 3) I thought that we weren't resorting to "Bashing" of other countries. this place is from poetry, not politics. yet here goes the "America sucks" speech again 4) You know, my grandfather spent the better part of a year fighting in world war 2. he is not a very patriotic man, but he served his country. he could have very well died and i may never had been born, but he didn't. i'm not going to insult a country that a person such as my grandfather would defend. 5) Honestly, i know very little about australia. and i know very little about the way that they view americans. i guess that i must accept this for its educational value. 6) no way you'd ever want to go to america? that's fine, but until then how can you judge it? i've not said one coarse word about your country taeira, because i don't know a soul there. different people have different views of america. 7) america is diverse, full of freedom (maybe too much, but that's the samest way to preserve democracy) and really a beautiful place. only in america? yes some things are truly american, and they are not all bad. 8) i wish that i could dispell all the myths about american culture, but i can't. conservatives perpetuate this "America is the evilest place on the planet" idea by attacking their own culture. it's not as bad as everyone thinks. i'm not afraid to go to school, and i'm not afraid to walk home alone. i guess i really am patriotic and i understand how someone could be upset by what sugar* said, but moer things have been said about america and when you retort with such acidic comments, it applies to all americans. i DO apologize if i offended you, because that is not at all what i was trying to do. just trying to be american, a little |

I know that I have never ben to your country but i'm just going on what i've heard..anyway im sick of argueing about this ..it's going nowhere...i was just stciking up for my country..at least the things i said about america had soem truth behind em..the australia attacks by sugar were just spiteful and unfounded yeh im not saying anything more..but the good thing is that i never realised how much i love my country... |
