Runaway Stranger

Flapping in the breeze, the cage door swings.
The caged bird flees.
The caged spirit's free.

When the cage lock gave, the bird rejoiced.
The bird thought once,
She didn't look twice.

When she looked in the mirror, the little bird saw.
The little bird knew.
They knew nothing at all.

They cooed at the bird, and they thought they knew.
They were proud of themselves.
Nobody saw.

"Poor little bird," her spirit cried.
Her soul was smothered.
She almost died.

Runaway stranger, the birdie flew.
She found herself.
Then, they knew.
