Did you ever lay awake and flutter
in and out of the light of day?
And wonder
just how your life had gotten away?
Did it pass you by
as though it never came?
Or did it relax and stay awhile
just like it were a dream?
Did time last as long as it should
for you, my dear?
Or did it creep by
without a trace that it was ever there?
Was it a life worth admiring,
in all its ups and downs?
And did you cherish it
the way you should,
when it was all around?
So many questions
that you asked yourself,
remain as still as your heartbeat does now
with all your loved ones standing ‘round.
They stay there,
feet planted firmly on the ground,
unwilling to let themselves be free.
Of all the sorrow
they hold inside,
of all the memories of what you could be.
Take one last look at the life you threw away,
and tell me again, dear friend,
why you could never stay.
