****I really didn't know whether this should go under feelings or suggestion box, but these are my feelings so I decided to post it here.****

When you post a poem, of course when people critique it you want to hear good things about it.  But I don't really want to hear from people "oh nice poem" "good job" "i enjoyed it".  I want a real critique of things I did wrong and that I can approve upon.

I don't know if anyone else here at pipTalk feels this way but I just want to know what people are really thinking.  I want a critiquer's point of view, not a friend's.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me complain about how nice and kind people are. lol.  If anyone else feels this way, let me know.

I know your frustration. It's rare that you'll find that in Open, despite the critique check it seems many people are afraid to offend(because I know I've written some stinkers). Your other option of course, is the Critical Analysis forum. Or when you do post in open, attach a note and possible points you're unsure of for critique.

Our Open Forum (among most of our other main forums) has definitely evolved with a venue of primarily "supportive" respondants.

When we found that the complexion of those forums wasn't about to change, we opened the Critical Analysis Forum to offer a place where poets could post their work and receive constructive feedback from peers.  CA remains your best option if you're looking for critique on your work....

And of course, you can always e-mail your fellow poets and ask them for more indepth feedback...and I'll bet a dollar to a donut, you'll get it!

I do better (and learn more) with the e mail thingie.

I'm just not comfortable with publicly critiquing someone's work unless I've been corresponding with them for some time.

But I AM eternally grateful for those who took the time to help me via e mail.

I simply wrote the poets I admired and asked.(and for all those I DIDN'T write--please don't take that the wrong way either..sheesh--see what I mean? I'm sensitive. grin)

They were more than generous with their time and gentle with the advice.

Good luck, m'friend!

Thank you so much for all you suggestions.  I would have never thought to e-mial people and have never really thought of the Critical Analysis forum.  Thanks again!

I understand the need for critiques and not just praise, and posting in the applicable forum makes sense.  I, however, find myself wishing to encourage people, even if I am not inspired by their work, as poetry is so very tender to the heart and we all have such differences in taste.  Yes, there is some bad poetry, I've written some myself, but for a delicate heart, I've not the heart to say so in the open forum.  The idea of working with a poet via e-mail is cool.  I hadn't thought of that either.  As an uneducated poet (no schooling in the art so to speak) it would be nice.  Glad you brought the topic up.

What if the reader was moved by the poem but found nothing wrong with it? I share in your frustration but often find myself typing a "Great Write" reply because I saw nothing wrong with the poem.

Critique does not necessarily mean showing what is wrong. Pointing out the good or moving parts can be just as helpful.

Many of us,  myself included...are not
familiar enough with many of the poets to
feel safe critiquing their work.  We are
not sure of their sensitivities, therefore
we take a softer approach.  If you want
some constructive criticism,  I too
recommend email.  I would be happy to put
in my two cents,  if I were asked...

Thats very true, Not a Poet, and thank you for pointing that out. Positive comments are also helpful but sometimes it is hard to pick out just what makes a poem good. I know I often read a poem and love it but have no idea why, but still want to compliment the writter on their effort.
