I wrote a poem in the Corner Pub section by this title. If anyone wants to know any more of the story, here it is.
I went to college out of state out of high school and joined the ROTC unit. I'm a history buff, so that's where this poem came from. The Lili Marlene that inspired this poem I first met in my Freshman english class. I fell in love with her four months later and have loved her ever since.
I grew very friendly with her for a year and some change until last week. I was helping her study for our French exam with the intent on asking her what she was up to Saturday night at the end of the study session. She asked me if I'd met her boyfriend. I replied I hadn't, asked her if she needed any help, then I left the room. I made it into the next building before I looked very depressed. I slept a grand total of 2.4 hours that night.
I saw them together today, she looked so happy. Part of me is happy that she's found someone. The other is sad that the someone in question isn't me. I hope she doesn't forget me, and I'm just the generic nice guy who faded into the background because he couldn't grow a pair and tell her sooner how he felt. So that's the story. May God bless you with happiness, forget me not "My Own Lili Marlene."
