Well, Karilea, here goes... "soul mate" to me means that you "know" deep in your heart, that this person was chosen by God to be you mate in life. Proof of this theory is when you look around, no else could take his place. There is a sense of oneness and completeness, even in times of heartache and trouble.

Summers haunting melody
that awakens
the butterflies,
calling them to join
the dance
in their silent song
of praise to God.

Soulmates?  I definitely believe in the concept.  Look at all the people all over the world that have found the "one for them".  I cannot believe that it was just coincidence. And I too know the feeling of being so certain that someone is "the one".  It's like a lock and key..you just fit with that person in a wonderful, mysterious, yet deeply loving way.  Like ellie said, there is a sense of oneness even in times of heartache.

Well I believe that people have soul mates because I have found mine. Soul mates (in my opinion) are people that you connect with on a level that defies all boundaries. Every single ounce of your being whispers their name and you bleed for their every word. Needing them as you need no other and loving them with more power than what was used to create the universe. Through your soul mate you taste eternity. It is the most intimate and deep bond of all.

*sigh* like Aucassin and Nicolette, soul-mates...
I believe you can love anybody. But the real "connection" the heart to heart soul-mate stuff is reserved for one person and one person only....

just my thoughts

Ah, these are good answers.  Esp., Enchantress, "through your soul mate you taste eternity..." lovely thoughts.

I believe in this concept... though I think it is a real task trying to find them.  They are the one person that can understand you and cares for you for who you truly are, and no differently.  In times of saddness and joy, they are your second pair of eyes, and a second heart to feel things with you.  Just random thoughts though.

To me, a soulmate is the following...

Your best friend, your true love, the one that once you have met, you cannot live without. In turn, you are that person's best friend and true love. Yes, you can know love more than once in your life, but there is a time when you meet THE someone in your life and the feeling of love, friendship and closeness just seems to grow unabated in spite of whatever setbacks may come between you. Once you have known that feeling and that bond, nothing will ever compare. There are also things like knowing exactly what each other is thinking or feeling just from a few words typed on a computer screen. I KNOW that to be true... it works both ways for my soulmate and I and I love her dearly (just slipped that one in there, sorry   ) It really is a connection of two souls, former a greater one.

THAT is a part of what "soulmate" means to me.

Eric.

Why only one?

Is love monogamous then? We can only love one person that much? I think that there are different levels of soul mates as there are with most other things in the world. Each one connects as no one else would, yet at the same time just as everyone else would. I think that we can have friend soul mates, lover soul mates, teacher soul mates, on and on. I think that there are several people for everyone who can reach you on that "higher" level and touch you in a way that no one else can.

I know I have several soul mates... people who've touched me, and (hopefully) been touched by me.

I used to believe in the concept.
Now I am more inlcined to attribute the phenomenon to obsessive compulsive disorder.
Soulmates would have to be together until death,, otherwise one has a soulmate and the other not?...

Everyone seems to associate 'soulmate' with a lover. I think you can mate with your body - to a lover. But a 'soul mating' can take place without sex! Two friends can be soul mates in my opinion......

PdV, you are correct, this took on the connotation of "lovers"...

a followup question to this would be...and what if the soul-mate was a person so in tune with you, but NOT a lover...

of which I know SEVERAL esp. around here...

so thanks for making this take a turn...

soul mates...that's a funny thing...I believe taht in the most generic use of the phrase, that people are referring to a lover, but in agreement with others, you can have a connection so deep to a best friend...I know I do.
But actual soul mates in the physical sense as well...I believe that they COULD exist, but perhaps not as narrowly as people believe...When speaking of "THE ONE" I believe that he/she could be under your nose the whole time. I also believe that people lament way too much about the one who got away...believing that that person was their soulmate...pitiful.
Last word is---Soul mates are a wonderful concept, but not one that people should dwell on too much, lest they become disenchanted and unhappy.

As has already been mentioned   a soulmate could be a lover or a friend. Either way I don't think it matters. The relationship between soulmates is different to that of lovers, and that of friends, I think the term "higher level" was used and I feel that is an apt descrfiption.

I believe that at some point in our lives we all will meet our soulmate (if you believe the conceept of a soulmate it has to happen) the trick is to recognise that at the time. And as sonjes has stated one should not be consumed in the searching for "the one". They may enter and indeed leave your life, but they will always be your soulmate. Sorry Jamie but I disagree with you on this one, it is a spirtual thing and as such transends such boundaries.

Well there you have my two cents worth.

As said by many before me. . . soul mates just aren't lovers. . . they're friends. . . people that just know you. . . know what you're thinking before you say it. . . when you're sad. . . they're sad, when you're happy. . . and so on. . .

But do they really exist??  I would have to say "YES!!!"

I have many friends who qualify as this. . . they are closer to me than ever. . .

Now then, in the context of lovers. . . there are Soul Mates there too. . . but they take longer to find. . . sometimes Lifetimes. . . the idea that there is one perfect person for us shouldn't really be that silly or outlandish. . . yet, it is. . . why is that?

Well, it's probably because we don't know that the right person for us is the right person for us. . . think. . . was there someone in your life that you didn't date (someone of the opposite sex) but who you told everything to??  Someone who knew you better than you knew yourself. . . that person who you called at 2:00 in the morning when things didn't work out. . . or who you took to that wedding when you didn't have a date. . . remember them??

Now, I'm not saying that they were your soulmate. . . but they may have been. . . isn't that what a soulmate is?

What I am saying is that the right person for you may be right under your nose right now. . . if only we could see it. . . take a look. . .

I have a few soulmates and I can see why I agree with Prometheus mentioning obsessive compulsive disorder and when Sven mention about being right under our nose I can witness to that

Well....the true understanding of what a soul mate is is as deep an mysterious as the true understanding of all of the levels and types of love.  I suppose a "soul mate" is the one person that you were truely meant to combine your soul with.  I've not met mine, so I couldn't begin to explain how exactly you'de know when it they're there.  I suppose it'd be as simple as knowing you're in love....but I really don't know.

I agree with Christopher. There are many kinds of soulmates out there.

Friend soulmate~~~My best friend Christina has been there for me for the past 4 years. We've been in a fight to the point that we stopped talking for months. And for some strange reason God gave us back to each other. Knowing that we were meant to be friends.

Teacher soulmate~~~There was one teacher at my school that would help me in any way possible that she could. And someone to be more then a teacher to me, but a role model a friend. Someone to confide in, to help me with my problems.

Lover's soulmate~~~I think that a soulmate is a person that God gave you for on special reason. To be there for you to share lifes smiles and tears. Someone that knows you better then you know yourself. Someone you look at and see yourself in. A person that you were destined to be with.

On searching~~~And if someone went searching for there soulmate I think that they would walk right past them. They are trying to hard to look for this one person that they pass them up.
