Okay, I'm open for any and all suggestions here. I got some very bad news today and I'm asking for help. I got a summons for jury duty in State Criminal Court...a 3 week duty. Here lies the problem...jury duty starts Oct 25 (for 3 weeks) I am scheduled to meet Tyson for the first time on Nov 4th. How can I get out of it and how can I get out of it in time to purchase my tickets. I have to purchase them 21 days in advance or I can't afford the trip. If I purchase them and can't go, I lose my money. Help!!!

Do you have a Doctor you trust? Get him/her to write a note explaining that you are going to be under treatment for a heart condition (love) during that time....ask that it be postponed...good luck!

As I told you Ruth, I'm pouring over the statutes to try and find you a loophole in your state. Let you know as soon as I find something.

Well, I was in pennsylvania when I was scheduled for Jury Duty in CA. I sent a letter post marked from Penn. telling them I moved (was no longer a resident of that county) giving the address I was staying at.
It worked for me - may work for you. Best Wishes,

Michael

You are a nurse, right, hoot? Any way to show a connection to patients that would make a prolonged absence on your part inadviseable?

Dream...thanks

Lucie...my son is 15, don't think that will work for me

Michael...I would rather go to jury duty than jail for a while

Balladeer....I am a nurse, yes...but work at a hospital in the maternity ward, don't think that will work either

Thank you all for your suggestions...I'm not giving up here

Hi there!

In California, you may postpone jury duty once due to personal reasons, then reschedule for a later time.

My advice: write a letter stating you need a postponement due to personal reasons (and it is none of their business what it is, and there is no need to lie in my opinion.) The faster you respond, the better it will be for you.

BEST WISHES IN YOUR SITUATION!

Ruth!
Walk, run, hide from the coppers!
If you need, I live in Cali and I can hide you out!
OMG!
We have to think about this people....who wants to donate blood to the "Ruth meets Tyson" fund???
Seriously though Ruth, think hard on it and explore all your options. The only impossibilities in the world are the things we consider impossible!
Best wishes!

The choice is fairly simple - sit on the jury and hang the SOB, or tell the judge that you firmly believe everyong is guilty until provoen innocent........

Ruthie...I know someone who was relieved of jury duty simply by having a note from her supervisor stating that there was no way to replace her weithout creating a hardship on the schedule there. Perhaps that would work for you. Or, as Julie says...I believe you can claim personal reasons. Will look into that bit for you. I have a friend in PA, she will know, she's been called before. Don't worry, hoot, nothing is gonna stop you two!!

Ok, see I knew there was a way of postponing it. See if that personal thing will work for you! You know I have you in my prayers. Ruth I really wish you the best. I hope you can get out of it by telling them it's personal.
Good Luck to you Ruth!

I have to agree with Julie Jordon Scott, Ruth, I think that it will work, but you'll have to act quickly.
Good Luck Ruth, my prayers and thoughts are with you

Hoot, I believe you are entitled to one extension or postponement for personal reasons (it should say that somewhere on the summons. (in small print, no doubt). If not, purchase your tickets, take them to the courthouse, tell them you've already made arrangements for a trip and if you cancel out you will lose your money. I don't see why they wouldn't grant you an extension, especially if you have proof that you have already made vacation plans. What if somebody had made arrangements for a honeymoon or a cruise? There has to be some latitude here. Why don't you give them a call and see what they say? Good luck!

Thank you each and everyone of you for your advice and kind remarks....this is my idea, sending it out tomorrow
Dear Mr. Drach;
Although I feel it’s my civic duty and a privilege to serve as juror on United States District Court; I am asking for a temporary exclusion from jury duty at this time. My boyfriend is stationed in San Diego at the naval base and is set to sail out for a 6 month tour of duty. I have already made non-refundable reservations for a flight on Nov 4th and will not be returning until Nov 9th. This is the only time we will be able to get together and meet before he leaves for duty. I would be most happy to serve on a jury after Nov 9th and welcome the opportunity to, but I am asking the court to show mercy and compassion and grant my request for an extension until then.

Hoot, HAVE FAITH! I'm sure the judge will show compassion on you. if not and you do have to go in to jury duty, you can always arrange it so that the lawyers won't want you on the jury. it's sneaky, underhanded, etc but this is an emergency and calls for drastic measures.

Hoot: I hope your plea for a postponement works... a lot of judges are pretty compassionate if they know you have a legitimate reason for not wanting to serve at a particular time and aren't just wanting to slouch.

I just moved from Mountain Time to Central Time Zone. In COlorado, at least in our county, we could not avoid serving but could exchange the date we served. Perhaps contact the office that sends out the jury summons and check it out. Good luck.

Perhaps one final suggestion? If the letter doesn't work, and you have to sit through voir dire, the only chance you will have to get off is to show extreme bias, i.e., if this is a murder case [criminal court might suggest that] or even a rape case, you would have a problem being "objective" to the offender because you've been "involved" and/or "have personally dealt with matters" like this before. As a legal assistant, I'm never picked...always the bridesmaid, never the bride. In any event, good luck. [I'd give anything to be able to sit through a trial once...I know what they are like to prepare for...]
