Perception I think, is the key. Is it a lie, prevarication, omission, whatever? Guilt comes from the perception of wrong, I think it would be fair to say that if you truly want to regain that trust, you must build a history of trust. In time, trust will become second nature. One question, is it trust in you, your trust in someone else, or trust in yourself that you question?
Being paranoid is the biggest reason I'm still around to practice my paranoia.
