When I write a poem (and mind you I am in NO WAY a pro!) I attempt to BLEED the poem. I really want my heart and soul to be exposed to the reader. I long to have the reader come away touched and maybe a bit tearful. My poetry may not be of a Shakespearean quality, but as long as it touches a heart or makes someone smile I feel that my job is well done. I am learning to write NOT from my life's experiences too, to make my poetry have a broad spectrum. I, alas, cannot rhyme to save my life, so any attempts from me will be awkward and painful! So my meager scratchings here on the forums are just a "Freeverse" type deal. I'll leave the rhyming to Nan and the rest of you awesome poets! I am happy to be surrounded by all of you talented pens and hope it'll rub off on me sometime soon!
I look foward to any thoughts or feelings ya'll might have
Happy Writing
Izzy

I've admired anyone who can write freely without the constraints of rhyme. Guess I'm from the 'old school' that makes it a challenge to find just the right end word that will rhyme - thus I have several rhyming dictionaries at my elbow. I think the rhymes don't sell as well as free verse..that seems to be the more acceptable modern form of poetry....I'm often told I should write for greeting cards..hmmmmm...don't think Hallmark is for me though.

Though I write from experience I often write from challenge phrases (sent by friends) or from everyday phrases I've heard or read. One or two words will trigger an image in my mind and I write it down. I keep a small notebook with me at all times for inspiration.

This is a wonder way to kick off your 'moderation' of this forum.

I personally used to write a lot about personal experiences and rhyme, but last summer I went to a writing seminar that I was chosen for and the first poem I wrote was unlike any other I have ever written. I believe free verse is my escape from any restraints...through it I can get lost in my writing. Don't ever feel obligated to write like a certain person or even a group of people. Orginality often attracts attention.
