You’re standing there with scythe in hand –
Is this fulfilling some great plan?
I denounce it and spit on you –
You’re ignorant of what you do!

Where was your cloak when cowed, I shivered
Praying that I might be delivered
From one more dawn, from one more fight?
Where were you on those endless nights?

Where were you when tears formed their trail
Down trembling cheeks that choked back wail,
When despair liquefied my bones?
I’d nothing left to call my own.

I’ve scratched and clawed my way to light
And NOW I look to see the sight
Of finger commanding I follow?
The unfairness is hard to swallow!

But wait! I will not follow meek!
If you want me, then you must speak.
Just hear my answer, loud and clear –
Get lost, Death, you’re not wanted here!

Great stuff.
I love that ending.

"But wait! I will not follow meek!
If you want me, then you must speak."

Cool writing.

A wonderful poem. I enjoyed it immensely.
And a marvellous summation too, one of the best endings to a poem I have read in a while.

"Get lost, Death, you’re not wanted here!"

No, you cannot interest me in a game of chess! Get lost!

"The world won't end in darkness, it'll end in family fun
With Coca Cola clouds behind a Big Mac sun."

Those that struggle the most at the hands of death end up in great agonies, and they never end, and if they do, well, the same grind is ahead, after you choose the door youll wake up after a few months, and that`s in a church as your head is being watered, then this is another change, to do what? learn to die in peace, without struggle.

Once again, you have taken an issue that is spoken silently in everyones heart, and spread it out in the brilliant light.

The outcome is masterful. Very well done, and done only as you could do it.

Ruth...Here's that backbone of inner strength that I admire and the guts to yell it outloud.

Not you, no way.....I know you feel weak sometimes, but there is a core of strength in you that leaves me in awe when it shows through.....

But what a poem! It's like a banner that's worthy of marching under. Proud to know you, I am.

That Grim Reaper daresn't take you before your time! ~ or he'll have to face a formidable avenging angel!

Like you, when he shows me his ugly face, I scream like hell and scare him off!

Give 'em hell, Harri-ette!
