what was hot in summer
begins to cool
hearts are jogged in their resting places
beat with an unknown destination
they lean not to anyone’s understanding
but reach for meaning
there are no leaves to burn red and gold
where there were bare shoulders
new jackets ride
fractals strain to what was
looking back to the curve of lizard tails
on warm red rocks
they repeat themselves in great loops
endlessly
endlessly
birds do not fly south
seeking warmth
but accept what is adequate

this concludes summer
in the desert

You took me on a journey to a place I have never been.  A lovely retreat and you are still among one of my favorite writers.

Your #1 fan,

Have you written of the colors
of the mountains in dawn?

I would like to see that from you.

One more lovely escapade to the edges of "somewhere else". You paint so very well!
