Facts of Life
By Larry Chadwick

As the list of my coworkers grows longer,
There is a peculiarity that is growing stronger.
The majority are quite young I find,
And even that is being kind.

A man younger than I just retired,
He wasn’t even at risk of being fired.
So in reflecting on this mess,
I have something that I must confess.

Though two children is all I’ve had,
They’re all young enough that I could be their dad.
Because I’ve never been bothered by my age,
I find it odd that they think of me as the sage.

Birthdays are a necessary dread,
As the alternative is that of being dead.
It makes me want to call in sick and stay in bed,
But then I remember, I’m just older I’m not dead.
December 9, 2006

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

when i became a deputy i had to keep up with kids half my age to make it and they gave no one any slack. this one kid told me every day to quit, that i was too old and could never keep up, i told him they would have to flunk me out i would NEVER quit. well to be honest i cried almost every day on the way home in my car so no one would see me and things hurt on me i never even knew i had...and i told myself the academy would be over soon...well the rest of the story is...he quit durring the first 2 months saying the job was too hard...and i...am still there...ha ha ha

Oh Larry, the other day I asked one of my co workers her age, as she is always so nice to me and tells me almost every day I am a "sweet lady" or a "pretty lady". I was surprised to learn she is just a year younger than you. Now I know why she flatters me so often. I then told her she could easliy be my daughter! LOL. mom

Hey slick lady, I understand you, I walk very tall and fast every morning as I leave work with a huge smile and "good morning" to all as I pass by. I refuse to let anyone think I am tired after my eight hour shift .... martyjo

Oh drat!  Getting older is a fact of life for sure.  I've never really thought much about getting older because when working with young children, I'm surrounded by energy, and just fall into an energetic mode.  This winter the old knees are telling the facts the way they really are!  (Luckily, most days I don't listen to them.
What do knees know anyway?)

Great to read your words again, Larry.

The truth is I don't care about age and even funnier is that because of my attitude about life my coworkers are shocked to know I'm 57!

Helen,
You know I followed your academy matriculation with much interest. But I had no idea about the drop-out story. Too funny! And how are you liking your work now? And thank you for responding.

Marty Jo (mom),
So is that really a public confession? Hope your office doesn't visit here! And thank you.

Miscie,
Well, I could tell you what my knees know, but they're both not working! LOL And thank you.

Dixie,
Hehe, thanks.

See?  That is why I retired early while I was ahead so I wouldn't feel exactly that!   We're into the second generation of babyboomers now, and those young whippersnappers are retiring at 45 and 50 now, thanks to the computer age!  I am just glad I am getting my pension eventually before it's all gone, and you could be thankful for that maybe?

Hi, Larry! As they say, (whoemver "they" are! ), one's age is just a number! (Thank goodness!) Your spirit is so young! ~ and your soul is very wise!

Not only did I appreciate your words, but I was also moved by all the warm and witty replies that your poem engendered!

Giving you a big, warm hug,

Linda Lou

Helen,
Guns & cuffs. Hmmmm... Guess they trust you! And thanks for sharing as it's fun to know how things are going.

martyjo,
No reason to hide. Besides, eventually we're bound to look our age.

Kate,
Well at least it's the only way to live longer! Thanks

Sharon,
You know that I truly admire you for so many things. And the early retirement is one. Miss you and thanks for stopping by.

Linda Lou!
You are the best! Thanks. I still think and feel really young. I guess God wired me for eternity so I wanna cash in.

Martie,
Just for the record you aren't getting off so easy. As my eyes are likely better than yours and challenge you as to who is the cutest. And thank you.

Angel4aKing,
Well I think I've got my kid by the short hair since we're so close in age. Besides he never really scared me and I've alays treated himi pretty good.

I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
