.

It was dark
As it always seems to be
At this time of year

The houses
Bedded in their yards
With their eyes closed
The cars crowded along the curbs

In a sky without clouds
Among what stars there were
The moon in its constant solitude
Focused the silence of the hour

It is too late for this
I thought  And yet still I stood there
As I have before
More often than I care to recall

As if that night it might be different
If only for a little longer the heart’s
Faith would have its miracle
And that dawn which had never come
Would arrive

As if I waited
I would soon feel the tender warmth of it
And so again I stood in the depths of night

Waiting to hear
The sound of light
Footsteps on the street

.

Thank you all,

This was a response to Mark Strand's
poem "Black Sea" in his new collection
"Man and Camel".  This is not the first time
it's happened and I don't believe it
will be the last.

Thanks again

John

I haven't been on this site for a while... but I'm really glad to see your still posting poems here. I always enjoyed reading your work, and this was no diffrent. You always seemed to spark a memory.

Thanks again,

I’m  really surprised how well this is received.

There was an ulterior motive to my posting
as I’m trying to decide which of the two,
this poem or “It” ,to use as my introduction
at a little state poetry society meeting I’m
thinking of attending this weekend.  It
seems this might be the preference.

Thanks again

John

This will be in 2600.

S1. His  heart at spring, lonely, cold.
S2/S3. let the feelings out to the outside. jealous of the houses who are comfortably in their place and the cars who snugged with each other warmly.
S4. s5 hope, old or young
S6. warmth VS  S1's cold
S7. sound vs S2's quiet.

I have no words for this one. It is a wonderful one.
