Grasping At Humanity

rising up out of the sodden earth
the creature reaches toward the moon
its bony hand outstretched as if pleading
transfixed in horror i stare frozen to my spot
grasping at humanity it all falls short

i cannot move i am frozen to the ground
why am i watching why am i not running
it turns toward me with hunger in its eyes
yet it only beckons me to follow grotesquely
grasping at humanity it all falls short

i follow with trepidation as it leads me on
the path we take makes me shudder with fear
i know this route my panic surges upward
how could he know what have i done
grasping at humanity it all falls short

suddenly he stops at the edge of the ravine
he points over the edge i slink back
i know now what he is doing i cant help myself
my shame is too much what i did was wrong
grasping at humanity it all falls short
