In response to some snobs who do not like sentimental works (nobody on this site, though!):

The Death of Sentimentality

Sentimentality should die, we've heard.
It should vanish without a single word.
And though we would quite like to have it stay,
We fear the muse would have but naught to say.

If all expression was to turn to grey,
Wouldn't that meld the best of night and day?
Then all that seems worthy and not absurd,
Will fly with the last sentimental bird.

Then sad, yet plain, words that we have conjured,
To "sentimental," snobs would be inured.
Dreams, crushed, crumple to the ground where they lay,
And children lose the joy with which they play.

While if, by chance, to sentiment we stray,
Our thoughts, though eloquent, are turned away.
And all life would decay and not be stirred,
And no malaise will ever more be cured.

Is this a world we want, with vision blurred?
"Sentimentality stays!" we demurred.
And those who want it any other way,
Have visions Dark when from the Light they stray.

Sad Dark, do not consume their souls, we pray!
Let sentiment imbue their feet of clay.
Then poignancy and pain again are heard,
And sentiments help spread the hopeful word.

I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran

John~
I'm happy to report, that although I am sentimental
I'm not owning up to being a sentimental SNOB~
(a sentimental slob, perhaps)

I LOVE sentimentality ... it splashes me in ink-of-think from the heart~

Hi, Marge.

I did a little edit.  My meaning wasn't to say "sentimental snobs," but rather "snobs who are inured to sentimentality."

Thanks for your "sentimental" comments!

Hi, Shadows.

Yes, some people are more sentimental than others, but I think that, deep down, most of us are rather sentimental on some level.  We may not cry a sappy movies, but we might be moved to tears by pictures of our favorite pet from childhood, or of a favorite grandparent, now long gone.

Have a happy, mildly sentimental day!

John

For some reason the word itself "sentimental" has gotten a bad reputation.  As if it is just the frosting with no cake...truthfully, I prefer the frosting.

Let always there be sentimental, for without it gray exist and this my friend, until experienced deep, is not a place to be ,I for one would go to my knees in a heartbeat for it rather than the color of gray, I can assure..A mix in life is what makes the trip when it draws to closure, well worth the journey

Hi, Martie!

Too true.  And I like frosting, too!  Of course, a little bit of cake WITH lots of frosting never hurts, either...!

Hi, mavbear.

I always hope that it is in vogue, and even if it isn't, I will still be sentimental, anyhow!

Have a sentimental journey!

Nancy, Nancy, Nancy...

I'm a hopeless romantic, too!  But you should already know that by my poems!
