you wore tiptoes to the gallery
but the artist was behind you
and below the gaze of your gods
that always needed your worshiping

my hands prayed at the fountain
you kneeled your sins there too
and laughed at what we had
in common when it was moistened

we shared a chair back with elbows
and were mutually nonchalant
with our eyes in the stairway
where the hollow was welcome warmth

a place to rest the wondering
if not for a lifetime, just a moment
where you could unravel your gown
and I could pretend I didn't notice

the confident flavors of your mangos
